WHILE HE LEADS, I CANNOT FALL – Pilgrim’s Joy Devotional, inspired by hymns

October 13 2022

Listen or read below (You can do both, too!)

Even without having full details of the age, experience, mental health and fitness levels of a pilot, we climb into airplanes and expect to land safely. Why then do we fear when our Lord, whose excellent record of ‘safe-leading’ is well known, in charge? This hymn writer says: while He leads, I cannot fall!

Brightly doth His Spirit shine

Into this poor heart of mine;

While He leads I cannot fall;

Trusting Jesus, that is all.

Trusting as the moments fly

Trusting as the days go by,

Trusting Him whatever befall

Trusting Jesus, that is all.

Yes, your Lord has an impeccable and unrivalled record of ‘safe-leading’ and, like this hymn writer, you should be confident to say, “while He leads, I cannot fall.”

The psalmist testified that, “I have set the LORD always before me; Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved.” You can have that confidence, too, if you will allow Him be your compass on which your eyes are set, of you will allow Him be your companion on this pilgrim road.

There’s indeed an amazing confidence that comes to you while He leads. Have you ever felt it? You are able to say of the Lord, “For You will light my lamp; The Lord my God will enlighten my darkness. For by You I can run against a troop, By my God I can leap over a wall.”

While He leads, you also become invincible to the enemy of your soul. Because no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. And then he will plunder his house. As the Lord’s, the enemy must first conquer the Lord before ever reaching you, a ludicrously impossible proposition.

Dear Christian pilgrim, the place to be is behind the Lord, walking in His footstep. Beside Him, letting Him hold your hand. Before Him, letting Him observe your ways to see if there be any offensive way in you.

SO, if there are clouds of trouble forming in the distance, if there are storms presently raging in your life, if you are practically buffeted on every side by the afflictions of life, the Holy Spirit invites you:  put your trust in Jesus, and simply trust Him enough to follow in the path of faith and unceasing prayer. When you do so, you will find that while He leads, as long as he leads, as long as you follow Him, you cannot fall.

Brightly doth His Spirit shine

Into this poor heart of mine;

While He leads I cannot fall;

Trusting Jesus, that is all.

Trusting as the moments fly

Trusting as the days go by,

Trusting Him whatever befall

Trusting Jesus, that is all.

Let us pray.

Dear Lord, in times of pain, sorrow, fear and anxiety, grant us the grace to trust in you, and to follow in the path of faith and unceasing prayer knowing fully well that no storm can swallow the ship captained by You. In Jesus name, Amen.
