Has Your Faith Been Weakened by the Bruises and Scars of Life?

Tap play to listen. May the boundless love of God and His mercy and grace uphold, heal, strengthen, renew, refresh, restore, and revive you. In Jesus name, Amen.

Dear Christian pilgrim, You have read countless stories of the triumphs and victories of faith. But I hope you know that faith does not always roar in confident assurance. Sometimes, and perhaps most times, faith is the quiet, troubled, weak even  bruised and injured assurance that keeps pressing forward towards the Cross of Christ in spite of the bruises of life inflicted by loss, sadness, sorrow, regrets, hurts, discouragement, disappointment and shame.

The reason why many journeys of faith have been stagnant or abandoned is that many suppose that they have to first heal of their bruises before pressing forward towards the Cross of Christ. That is a mistake, a fatal error in the journey of faith. Are you bruised and scarred by discouragement, because of unanswered prayers and delays? By fear, because what confronts you is truly challenging? By regrets, because you’ve made appalling errors and mistakes? By hurts, because you have been mistreated by many in the body of Christ? By sadness and sorrow, because of loss and bereavement?

Don’t suppose that you have to deal with or overcome these bruises before moving forward in your journey of faith. Come just as you are, saying:

Just as I am, though tossed about

with many a conflict, many a doubt,

fightings and fears within, without,

O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Charlotte Elliott

See, your Lord is not looking for the strong, the healthy, the perfect, the fully-fed, or those who have arrived and have it all figured out. They do not need the Saviour.

Jesus calls out to the sin-sick and guilty, saying, “I came not for the righteous, but for sinners.”

He calls out to the thirsty and the poor in spirit, saying, “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.”

He calls out to the sick who reach out to touch just the hem of His garment, saying, “your faith has made you whole.”

He calls out to the one made weary by the troubles of this world, saying, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

Our Lord says, ‘come just as you are’ because He knows that you cannot heal of those bruises and scars on your own or by your own power or strength. It is in Christ and in Christ alone that the guilty receives pardon, the doubtful is gently rebuked, the fearful is encouraged, the weak is strengthened, the discouraged is given hope, the sorrowful is made glad, the anxious is relieved, and the sinner forgiven. Outside of Jesus, Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.

So, don’t try to deal with these downward-pulling forces on your own, or think you cannot go to Jesus until you have dealt with them: Come to Jesus with them; come to Him in spite of them. He is faithful who said, whoever comes to me I will in no wise cast out. He is a kind and considerate saviour. He knows your frame. He remembers that you are mere dust. And as the prophet of old said, “He will not crush the bruised reed or put out a flickering candle.”

Don’t hide from him.

So, if your faith has been weakened by the bruises and scars of life that you are like a weak grass of the filed, He will not crush you, but will nurture and nourish you back to health and buoyancy. If the bruises and scars of life have almost made your lights go out like a flickering candle, He will pour new oil in your lamp and make you shine brighter than before.

Make this your song:

Just as I am, though tossed about

with many a conflict, many a doubt,

fightings and fears within, without,

O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Charlotte Elliott

Let us pray. As you courageously move forward, onward and upward in faith, may the boundless love of God and His mercy and grace uphold, heal, strengthen, renew, refresh, restore, and revive you. In Jesus name, Amen.

Oh, for grace to trust Him more!

Tap ‘Listen in browser’ to play.

Dear Christian pilgrim, have you noticed from the gospel accounts that the instruction from Jesus to those in difficulty often stood in stark contrast to conventional wisdom and rational thought.

He told Peter and his fishing party to launch out again after they had laboured hard all night; He told the relatives and friends of Lazarus to remove the stone covering the grave of a man who was already stinking; He told His disciples to collect the five loves and two fish when the need arose to feed five thousand people; and He told His followers to turn the other cheek when slapped.

Yes, the instruction from Jesus often stood in stark contrast to conventional wisdom and rational thought. But all those who obeyed Him, all those who took Him at His Word experienced the amazing blessings of His gracious intervention.

Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,

Just to take Him at His Word

Just to rest upon His promise,

Just to know, “Thus saith the Lord!”

Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!

How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er

Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!

Oh, for grace to trust Him more

Louisa M.R. Stead

Thus saith the Lord to you and me today: “do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear …but seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Does this sound like the solution to your pressing problems today?

Again, thus saith the Lord to you and me today:  “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Does this sound like the solution to your pressing problems today?

Dear Christian pilgrim, do not ignore your Lord’s admonition, do not discount it, do not label it unrealistic,  but take Him at His word. Take Him at His word.

See, if you take Him at His word and instead of worrying or being anxious, you choose to serve God, to project His righteousness, to pray and thank Him, you will find that the peace of God which passes all understanding will envelope your heart and mind through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,

Just to take Him at His Word

Just to rest upon His promise,

Just to know, “Thus saith the Lord!”

Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!

How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er

Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!

Oh, for grace to trust Him more.

Louisa M.R. Stead

Let us pray.

Lord, please increase our faith to take You at Your word, to rest upon Your promise, and to confront all out challenges with: “Thus saith the Lord!” In Jesus name, Amen.

Jesus Demands Our All

If you have chosen to daily live in God’s presence, here’s a reminder that there can only be one king in a kingdom, and you cannot continue to be in charge of your own life while daily living in His presence.

All to Jesus I surrender,

All to Him I freely give;

I will ever love and trust Him

In His presence daily live.

Refrain:

I surrender all, I surrender all;

All to Thee, my blessed Savior,

I surrender all

Judson W. Van De Venter.

Dear Christian pilgrim, Jesus will not take anything less than your all. You must surrender all to Him, including your reputation in the society and your standing among your colleagues. For He has said, “Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.”

You must surrender all to Him, including opportunities to amass wealth ungodly and greedy ways for He warned you already:

“you cannot serve God and mammon.”

You must surrender all to Him, including all sinful pleasures and besetting sins; He warned, saying, “And if your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell.”

You must surrender all and nothing must take priority before Him; He said: “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.”

The problem is that Satan and the world often deceive us to think that we’re losing out when we surrender our all to Jesus. It is not so. Our Lord said, “the Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found, and hid. In his joy, he goes and sells all that he has, and buys that field.”

Who does that? Only the man who knows that the treasure of the Kingdom is far above all else.

I pray that the Lord will open your eyes to see that surrendering all to Him is not a loss, but an unquantifiable gain. In Jesus name, Amen.

All to Jesus I surrender,

All to Him I freely give;

I will ever love and trust Him

In His presence daily live.

Refrain:

I surrender all, I surrender all;

All to Thee, my blessed Savior,

I surrender all

Judson W. Van De Venter.

“Come, follow Me!”
And we see where Thy footprints falling,
lead us to Thee.

Refrain:
Footprints of Jesus that make the pathway glow;
we will follow the steps of Jesus where’er they go.

2 Though they lead o’er the cold dark mountains,
seeking His sheep,
or along by Siloam’s fountains,
helping the weak. [Refrain]

3 If they lead through the temple holy,
preaching the Word,
or in homes of the poor and lowly,
serving the Lord. [Refrain]

our journey done,
we will rest where the steps of Jesus
end at His throne. [Refrain]

A wonderful Savior is Jesus my Lord,

a wonderful Savior to me.

He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock,

where rivers of pleasure I see.

He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock

that shadows a dry, thirsty land.

He hideth my life in the depths of his love,

and covers me there with his hand,

and covers me there with his hand.

2 A wonderful Savior is Jesus my Lord;

he taketh my burden away.

He holdeth me up, and I shall not be moved;

he giveth me strength as my day. [Refrain]

3 With numberless blessings each moment he crowns,

and filled with his fullness divine,

I sing in my rapture,“Oh, glory to God

for such a Redeemer as mine!” [Refrain]

4 When clothed in his brightness, transported I rise

to meet him in clouds of the sky,

his perfect salvation, his wonderful love,

I’ll shout with the millions on high. [Refrain]

Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah.

1 Guide me, O my great Redeemer,
pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but you are mighty;
hold me with your powerful hand.
Bread of heaven, bread of heaven,

feed me now and evermore.

2 Open now the crystal fountain,
where the healing waters flow.
Let the fire and cloudy pillar
lead me all my journey through.
Strong Deliverer, strong Deliverer,
ever be my strength and shield,
ever be my strength and shield.

3 When I tread the verge of Jordan,
bid my anxious fears subside.
Death of death, and hell’s Destruction,
land me safe on Canaan’s side.
Songs of praises, songs of praises
I will ever sing to you,
I will ever sing to you.

Lord, grant us grace to make knowing you and doing your will more important in our lives than any other thing.

Good morning and thank you for listening to the Pilgrim’s Joy Devotional.

What is your upper most desire right now? Are you looking to God to help you fulfill it? And more than that, are you certain that you are fulfilling God’s own desire in your life?

He has asked you to seek first His own kingdom and then every other thing, that is, all those other things uppermost in your heart will be added to you. Matt. 6:33

The Holy Spirit is calling you to seek a deeper relationship with God through Jesus Christ. That deeper relationship will take you to heights and mountains where you will be surprised by the visions you will see, the strength you will receive, and the warm, sweet fellowship of the Holy Spirit that will envelope you.

My heart has no desire to stay
Where doubts arise and fears dismay;
Though some may dwell where these abound,
My prayer, my aim, is higher ground. [Refrain]

I want to live above the world,
Though Satan’s darts at me are hurled;
For faith has caught a joyful sound,
The song of saints on higher ground. [Refrain]

I want to scale the utmost height,
And catch a gleam of glory bright;
But still I’ll pray till heav’n I’ve found,
“Lord, lead me on to higher ground.

So, dear Christian go deeper to go higher. Deeper in prayer. When you dedicate yourself to a rich prayer life, he will lift you higher to see great and mighty things that you have never known before. Jeremiah 33:3

Go deeper to go higher. Go Deeper in Bible study and you will find yourself attaining higher levels of understanding that will make you rejoice like someone who has found great treasure. Psalm 119:162.

Go deeper to go higher. Go Deeper in fighting sin. Set your minds on things above, and not things below. Colossians 3:2 and then you will find yourself seeing the so-called pleasure of sin as false, evil and destructive.

Dear pilgrim, go deeper in your relationship with God and you will find yourself planted on higher ground where doubts and fears cannot cripple you, where Satan’s arrows cannot reach you and where your vision of heaven is so bright and clear.

Let us pray.

Lord, grant us grace to make knowing you and doing your will more important in our lives than any other thing. And as we do so, lift us higher and higher to the place where we will begin to experience the beauty of heaven on earth. In Jesus name, Amen!

My Never-Failing Treasury

Know the only place where resources don’t run out? Tap play to listen.

Are you worried that your resources are running low or could soon run out? If yes, you may indeed have good reasons to be so worried.

But I do hope that, in your anxious thoughts, you have not forgotten that you have access to God’s store house that has been described as a never-ending treasury filled with boundless gifts of grace.

Dear Name! the Rock on which we build;
  Our shield and hiding-place;
Our never-failing treasury, filled
  With boundless stores of grace.

-from the hymn, How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds by John Newton

Dear pilgrim, reach into this never-failing treasury by faith and in the name of Jesus. It is the treasury of King of kings whose is the earth and all that is in it, the King who controls the hearts and thoughts of the kings of this world like streams of water.

From this never-failing treasury filled with boundless stores of grace, Zacchaeus, the corrupt tax collector, the woman from whom 7 demons were expelled, and the thief on the right of the Cross of Jesus were forgiven their many sins and admitted into the kingdom of God.

From this never-failing treasury filled with boundless stores of grace, a widow neck-deep in debt received the means to pay back the loan with more money left over for her own needs; another widow’s jar of oil did not run dry in the time of famine and her bin of flour did not empty; and 5,000 hungry followers were fed with just 5 loaves and two fish with many leftovers.

Yes, from this never-failing treasury filled with boundless stores of grace, all who were presented to Jesus with diverse diseases in Luke 4 received healing; Peter’s mother-in-law’s fever was rebuked, and Bartimeus who cried out for Jesus received his sight.

And what is more, from this never-failing treasury filled with boundless stores of grace, the Lord has poured our His Holy Spirit on all who would call on the name of Jesus. And, as we read from John 3:34, God gives His Holy Spirit without limit.

Have you fallen into sin? Are you at your wits’ end? Are you held back by sickness and diseases? Are you at a crossroad? Are you afraid? Are you sad? Re you desirous of coming into fellowship with God? Reach into this never-failing treasury of grace by faith and in the name of Jesus. . There is grace upon grace for all who call on the name of Jesus. He will forgive, He will deliver, He will heal, He will lead, He will comfort, He will take away your fears, He will forgive, and He will give His Holy Spirit without measure.

Anytime you reach into this treasury by faith and in the name of Jesus, you will always find more than sufficient for your need.

Just as Jesus stood and shouted on the last and greatest day of the festival recorded in John 7:37, His Spirt calls out in clear voice today: “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me!”

And, yes, access to this treasury of grace has been paid for with the blood of Jesus Christ. No wonder the prophet was told to sound the invitation in Is. 55:1: “Is anyone thirsty? Come and drink— even if you have no money! Come, take your choice of wine or milk— it’s all free!

Dear Name! the Rock on which I build;
  My shield and hiding-place;
My never-failing treasury, filled
  With boundless stores of grace.

Let us pray.

Anytime you can on the name of Jesus, may God’s treasury be opened to you and there may you find boundless grace, more than sufficient grace, and grace upon grace in Jesus name. Amen.

Don’t Let Doubts Rob You!

1 There shall be showers of blessing:
This is the promise of love;
There shall be seasons refreshing,
Sent from the Savior above.

Refrain:
Showers of blessing,
Showers of blessing we need:
Mercy-drops round us are falling,
But for the showers we plead.

2 There shall be showers of blessing,
Precious reviving again;
Over the hills and the valleys,
Sound of abundance of rain. [Refrain]

3 There shall be showers of blessing:
Send them upon us, O Lord;
Grant to us now a refreshing,
Come and now honor Thy Word. [Refrain]

4 There shall be showers of blessing:
Oh, that today they might fall,
Now as to God we’re confessing,
Now as on Jesus we call! [Refrain]

How Kind, How Beautiful, and How Sweet-Smelling!

Inspired by the hymn, JESUS, THE VERY THOUGHT OF THEE

Dear pilgrim, I am one of those who, at the mention of the name of Jesus, feels an indescribable sweetness from the very core of my being. I am not alone. There are many blessed people just like me. St, Bernard of Clairvaux was also one of us. I hope you are in that number as well. Indeed, God’s Holy Spirit invites to join the number, the number of those who sweetly smile and swell with joy at the mention of the name of Jesus.

In celebration of this sweetness and joy, St. Bernard of Clairvaux wrote this:

 Jesus, the very thought of thee
with sweetness fills the breast;
but sweeter far thy face to see,
and in thy presence rest.

Could it be that it was Jesus Christ that the bride in Songs of Solomon 1:3 was referring to when she said: How pleasing is your fragrance; your name is like the spreading fragrance of scented oils. No wonder all the young women love you!

He smells of sweetness to the contrite, remorseful, and repentant sinner. For He has said: “…whoever comes to me, I will never drive away.”

He smells of sweetness to meek people who are not trusting in themselves for anything but are always looking to Him for help. He said of them blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth.

He smells of pleasing fragrance to those who fall, because He lifts them up. Indeed, as the prophet wrote in Isaiah 42:3a, He will not crush the weakest reed or put out a flickering candle; he will not step on the weakest grass and will not blow out a dying candle.

And to those who are genuinely seeking salvation, He reveals Himself. If with all your heart you truly seek me, you shall ever surely find me. Jer. 29:13

O hope of every contrite heart,
O joy of all the meek,
to those who fall, how kind thou art!
How good to those who seek!

Are you standing afar off on account of sin? Come to Him repentant and He will forgive you and embrace you with His love. In that warm embrqce, you will smell His sweet fragrance.

Have you fallen? Look up to Him and He will lift out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; He will set your feet on a rock and gave you a firm place to stand. That deliverance and help will fill your heart with sweetness.

Are you seeking Him for salvation, healing, wisdom, or provision? He will freely give. It was His voice in Is. 55:1 that cried out saying: “Is anyone thirsty? Come and drink— even if you have no money! Come, take your choice of wine or milk— it’s all free!

 Jesus, the very thought of thee
with sweetness fills the breast;
but sweeter far thy face to see,
and in thy presence rest.

O hope of every contrite heart,
O joy of all the meek,
to those who fall, how kind thou art!
How good to those who seek!

Let us pray. May the name of Jesus lift you out of the pit of sin, sickness, confusion, lack, and fear so much so that the sweetness of His perfume when He saved and helped you will stay fresh on you forever. In Jesus name, Amen.

The Wise Look Up and Call Out

Good morning. Let’s follow the steps of the saints: always looking up and calling out.

My faith looks up to Thee,

Thou Lamb of Calvary,

  Savior Divine;

Now hear me while I pray;

Take all my guilt away;

Oh, let me from this day

  Be wholly Thine.

2

            May Thy rich grace impart

Strength to my fainting heart,

  My zeal inspire;

As Thou hast died for me,

Oh, may my love to Thee

Pure, warm, and changeless be,

  A living fire.

3

            While life’s dark maze I tread,

And griefs around me spread,

  Be Thou my Guide;

Bid darkness turn to day,

Wipe sorrow’s tears away,

Nor let me ever stray

  From Thee aside.

4

            All thru life’s transient dream,

Until death’s sullen stream

  Shall o’er me roll,

Blest Savior, with Thy love,

Fear and distrust remove;

Make me Thy grace to prove

  Transform my soul.

A devotional inspired by the hymn, Out of my Bondage by William Sleeper

1 Out of my bondage, sorrow and night,

Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;

Into Thy freedom, gladness and light,

Jesus, I come to Thee.

Out of my sickness into Thy health,

Out of my want and into Thy wealth,

Out of my sin and into Thyself,

Jesus, I come to Thee.

2 Out of my shameful failure and loss,

Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;

Into the glorious gain of Thy cross,

Jesus, I come to Thee.

Out of earth’s sorrows into Thy balm,

Out of life’s storms and into Thy calm,

Out of distress to jubilant psalm,

Jesus, I come to Thee.

3 Out of unrest and arrogant pride,

Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;

Into Thy blessed will to abide,

Jesus, I come to Thee.

Out of myself to dwell in Thy love,

Out of despair into raptures above,

Upward for aye on wings like a dove,

Jesus, I come to Thee.

4 Out of the fear and dread of the tomb,

Jesus I come, Jesus I come;

Into the joy and light of Thy home,

Jesus, I come to Thee.

Out of the depths of ruin untold,

Into the peace of Thy sheltering fold,

Ever Thy glorious face to behold,

Jesus, I come to Thee.

Have faith in God, my mind,
Though oft Thy light burns low;
God’s mercy holds a wiser plan
Than Thou canst fully know.

Have faith in God, my soul,
His cross for ever stands;
And neither life nor death can pluck
His children from His hands.

Lord Jesus, make me whole;
Grant me no resting place,
Until I rest, heart, mind, and soul,

1 Joy fills our inmost hearts to-day!
The royal Child is born;
And angel hosts in glad array
His Advent keep this morn.
Rejoice, rejoice! Th’incarnate Word
Has come on earth to dwell;
No sweeter sound than this is heard,
Emmanuel!

2 Low at the cradle throne we bend,
We wonder and adore;
And feel no bliss can ours transcend,
No joy was sweet before.
Rejoice, rejoice! Th’incarnate Word
Has come on earth to dwell;
No sweeter sound than this is heard,
Emmanuel!

3 For us the world must lose its charms
Before the manger shrine,
When, folded in Thy mother’s arms,
We see Thee, Babe divine.
Rejoice, rejoice! Th’incarnate Word
Has come on earth to dwell;
No sweeter sound than this is heard,
Emmanuel!

4 Thou Light of uncreated Light,
Shine on us, Holy Child;
That we may keep Thy birthday bright,
With service undefiled.
Rejoice, rejoice! Th’incarnate Word
Has come on earth to dwell;
No sweeter sound than this is heard,
Emmanuel!

The Plot against Jesus

221 Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching, 2 and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people. 3 Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. 4 And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. 5 They were delighted and agreed to give him money. 6 He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.

Jesus Eats the Passover with His Disciples

7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.” 9 “Where do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked. 10 He replied, “As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, 11 and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’12 He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there.”13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover. 14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. 15 And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.” 17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. 18 For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.[1]

21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. 22 The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed. But woe to that man who betrays him!”23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this.

The Dispute about Greatness

24 A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. 25 Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. 29 And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Peter’s Denial Foretold

31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” 33 But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.” 34 Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”

Purse, Scrip, and Sword

35 Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?””Nothing,” they answered. 36 He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. 37 It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’[2]; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.” 38 The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.” “That’s enough!” he replied.

Jesus Prays in the Garden

39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.” 41 He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.[3] 45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”

The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”49 When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?” 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. 51 But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him. 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour-when darkness reigns.”

Peter Denies Jesus

54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. 55 And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.” 57 But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said. 58 A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” “Man, I am not!” Peter replied. 59 About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.” 60 Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Jesus Mocked and Beaten

63 The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. 64 They blindfolded him and demanded, “Prophesy! Who hit you?” 65 And they said many other insulting things to him.

Jesus before the Council

66 At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. 67 “If you are the Messiah,” they said, “tell us.” Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me, 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer. 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.” 70 They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?” He replied, “You say that I am.” 71 Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.”

Jesus and Zaccheus

191 Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. 3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. 5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. 7 All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.” 8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

The Parable of the Ten Pounds

11 While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear at once. 12 He said: “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. 13 So he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas.[1]‘Put this money to work,’ he said, ‘until I come back.’ 14 “But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We don’t want this man to be our king.’ 15 “He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it. 16 “The first one came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned ten more.’ 17 ” ‘Well done, my good servant!’ his master replied. ‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.’ 18 “The second came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned five more.’ 19 “His master answered, ‘You take charge of five cities.’ 20 “Then another servant came and said, ‘Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. 21 I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.’ 22 “His master replied, ‘I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow? 23 Why then didn’t you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?’24 “Then he said to those standing by, ‘Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’ 25 ” ‘Sir,’ they said, ‘he already has ten!’ 26 “He replied, ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what they have will be taken away. 27 But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them-bring them here and kill them in front of me.’ “

The Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem

28 After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 30 “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’ ” 32 Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 They replied, “The Lord needs it.” 35 They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road. 37 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: 38 “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!”[2]“Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!” 40 “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”

41 As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it 42 and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace-but now it is hidden from your eyes. 43 The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side.44 They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.”

The Cleansing of the Temple

45 When Jesus entered the temple courts, he began to drive out those who were selling. 46 “It is written,” he said to them, ” ‘My house will be a house of prayer’[3]; but you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’[4]” 47 Every day he was teaching at the temple. But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him. 48 Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words.

17 Then said he unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offences will come: but woe unto him, through whom they come!

It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.

Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him.

And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.

And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.

And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.

But which of you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say unto him by and by, when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat?

And will not rather say unto him, Make ready wherewith I may sup, and gird thyself, and serve me, till I have eaten and drunken; and afterward thou shalt eat and drink?

Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I trow not.

10 So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.

11 And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee.

12 And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off:

13 And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.

14 And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed.

15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God,

16 And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.

17 And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?

18 There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.

19 And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.

20 And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:

21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

22 And he said unto the disciples, The days will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not see it.

23 And they shall say to you, See here; or, see there: go not after them, nor follow them.

24 For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day.

25 But first must he suffer many things, and be rejected of this generation.

26 And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.

27 They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.

28 Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded;

29 But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.

30 Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.

31 In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back.

32 Remember Lot’s wife.

33 Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it.

34 I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left.

35 Two women shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

36 Two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

37 And they answered and said unto him, Where, Lord? And he said unto them, Wheresoever the body is, thither will the eagles be gathered together.

The Parable of the Dishonest Steward

161 And he said also unto his disciples, There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods. 2 And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward. 3 Then the steward said within himself, What shall I do? for my lord taketh away from me the stewardship: I cannot dig; to beg I am ashamed. 4 I am resolved what to do, that, when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses. 5 So he called every one of his lord’s debtors unto him, and said unto the first, How much owest thou unto my lord? 6 And he said, An hundred measures [1] of oil. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and sit down quickly, and write fifty.7 Then said he to another, And how much owest thou? And he said, An hundred measures [2] of wheat. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and write fourscore.8 And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.9 And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon [3] of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations. 10 He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. 11 If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, [4] who will commit to your trust the true riches? 12 And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man’s, who shall give you that which is your own? 13 No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. 14 And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided him. 15 And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.

The Law and the Kingdom of God

16 The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it. 17 And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail.

Jesus’ Teaching on Divorce

18 Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery.

The Rich Man and Lazarus

19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: 20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, 21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. 25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. 26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. 27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house:28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. 29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. 30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. 31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

The Parable of the Lost Sheep

151 Then all the tax collectors and the sinners drew near to Him to hear Him. 2 And the Pharisees and scribes complained, saying, “This Man receives sinners and eats with them.” 3 So He spoke this parable to them, saying: 4 “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? 5 And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. 6 And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’ 7 I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance.

The Parable of the Lost Coin

8 “Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? 9 And when she has found it, she calls her friends and neighbors together, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the piece which I lost!’ 10 Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

The Parable of the Lost Son

11 Then He said: “A certain man had two sons. 12 And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.’ So he divided to them his livelihood. 13 And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far country, and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living. 14 But when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in that land, and he began to be in want. 15 Then he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. 16 And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine ate, and no one gave him anything. 17 But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! 18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, 19 and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.” ‘ 20 And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. 21 And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ 22 But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet. 23 And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry; 24 for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ And they began to be merry. 25 Now his older son was in the field. And as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 So he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. 27 And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and because he has received him safe and sound, your father has killed the fatted calf.’ 28 But he was angry and would not go in. Therefore his father came out and pleaded with him. 29 So he answered and said to his father, ‘Lo, these many years I have been serving you; I never transgressed your commandment at any time; and yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might make merry with my friends. 30 But as soon as this son of yours came, who has devoured your livelihood with harlots, you killed the fatted calf for him.’ 31 And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours. 32 It was right that we should make merry and be glad, for your brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found.’ “

Jesus Heals a Sick Man

1One Sabbath Jesus went to eat a meal at the home of one of the leading Pharisees; and people were watching Jesus closely. 2A man whose legs and arms were swollen came to Jesus, 3and Jesus asked the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees, “Does our Law allow healing on the Sabbath or not?”

4But they would not say anything. Jesus took the man, healed him, and sent him away. 5Then he said to them, “If any one of you had a son or an ox that happened to fall in a well on a Sabbath, would you not pull them out at once on the Sabbath itself?”

6But they were not able to answer him about this.

Humility and Hospitality

7Jesus noticed how some of the guests were choosing the best places, so he told this parable to all of them: 8“When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not sit down in the best place. It could happen that someone more important than you has been invited, 9and your host, who invited both of you, would have to come and say to you, ‘Let him have this place.’ Then you would be embarrassed and have to sit in the lowest place. 10Instead, when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that your host will come to you and say, ‘Come on up, my friend, to a better place.’ This will bring you honour in the presence of all the other guests. 11For all those who make themselves great will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be made great.”

12Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a lunch or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or your rich neighbours — for they will invite you back, and in this way you will be paid for what you did. 13When you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind; 14and you will be blessed, because they are not able to pay you back. God will repay you on the day the good people rise from death.”

The Parable of the Great Feast

(Mt 22.1–10)

15When one of the men sitting at table heard this, he said to Jesus, “How happy are those who will sit down at the feast in the Kingdom of God!”

16Jesus said to him, “There was once a man who was giving a great feast to which he invited many people. 17When it was time for the feast, he sent his servant to tell his guests, ‘Come, everything is ready!’ 18But they all began, one after another, to make excuses. The first one told the servant, ‘I have bought a field and must go and look at it; please accept my apologies.’ 19Another one said, ‘I have bought five pairs of oxen and am on my way to try them out; please accept my apologies.’ 20Another one said, ‘I have just got married, and for that reason I cannot come.’

21“The servant went back and told all this to his master. The master was furious and said to his servant, ‘Hurry out to the streets and alleys of the town, and bring back the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.’ 22Soon the servant said, ‘Your order has been carried out, sir, but there is room for more.’ 23So the master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the country roads and lanes and make people come in, so that my house will be full. 24I tell you all that none of those who were invited will taste my dinner!’ ”

The Cost of Being a Disciple

(Mt 10.37–38)

25Once when large crowds of people were going along with Jesus, he turned and said to them, 26“Those who come to me cannot be my disciples unless they love me more than they love father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and themselves as well. 27Those who do not carry their own cross and come after me cannot be my disciples.

28“If one of you is planning to build a tower, you sit down first and work out what it will cost, to see if you have enough money to finish the job. 29If you don’t, you will not be able to finish the tower after laying the foundation; and all who see what happened will laugh at you. 30‘This man began to build but can’t finish the job!’ they will say.

31“If a king goes out with 10,000 men to fight another king who comes against him with 20,000 men, he will sit down first and decide if he is strong enough to face that other king. 32If he isn’t, he will send messengers to meet the other king, to ask for terms of peace while he is still a long way off. 33In the same way,” concluded Jesus, “none of you can be my disciple unless you give up everything you have.

Worthless Salt

(Mt 5.13; Mk 9.50)

34“Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, there is no way to make it salty again. 35It is no good for the soil or for the manure heap; it is thrown away. Listen, then, if you have ears!”

Repent or Perish

131 There were present at that season some who told Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 And Jesus answered and said to them, “Do you suppose that these Galileans were worse sinners than all other Galileans, because they suffered such things? 3 I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. 4 Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse sinners than all other men who dwelt in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.”

The Parable of the Barren Fig Tree

6 He also spoke this parable: “A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. 7 Then he said to the keeper of his vineyard, ‘Look, for three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree and find none. Cut it down; why does it use up the ground?’ 8 But he answered and said to him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and fertilize it. 9 And if it bears fruit, well. But if not, after that you can cut it down.’ “

A Crippled Woman Healed on the Sabbath

10 Now He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. 11 And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bent over and could in no way raise herself up. 12 But when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him and said to her, “Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.” 13 And He laid His hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God. 14 But the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath; and he said to the crowd, “There are six days on which men ought to work; therefore come and be healed on them, and not on the Sabbath day.” 15 The Lord then answered him and said, “Hypocrite! Does not each one of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or donkey from the stall, and lead it away to water it? 16 So ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound–think of it–for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?” 17 And when He said these things, all His adversaries were put to shame; and all the multitude rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by Him.

The Parable of the Mustard Seed

18 Then He said, “What is the kingdom of God like? And to what shall I compare it? 19 It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and put in his garden; and it grew and became a large tree, and the birds of the air nested in its branches.”

The Parable of the Leaven

20 And again He said, “To what shall I liken the kingdom of God? 21 It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal till it was all leavened.”

The Narrow Gate

22 And He went through the cities and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem.

23 Then one said to Him, “Lord, are there few who are saved?” And He said to them, 24 “Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able. 25 When once the Master of the house has risen up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open for us,’ and He will answer and say to you, ‘I do not know you, where you are from,’ 26 then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets.’ 27 But He will say, ‘I tell you I do not know you, where you are from. Depart from Me, all you workers of iniquity.’ 28 There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and yourselves thrust out. 29 They will come from the east and the west, from the north and the south, and sit down in the kingdom of God. 30 And indeed there are last who will be first, and there are first who will be last.”

Jesus Laments over Jerusalem

31 On that very day some Pharisees came, saying to Him, “Get out and depart from here, for Herod wants to kill You.” 32 And He said to them, “Go, tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.’ 33 Nevertheless I must journey today, tomorrow, and the day following; for it cannot be that a prophet should perish outside of Jerusalem. 34 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing! 35 See! Your house is left to you desolate; and assuredly, I say to you, you shall not see Me until the time comes when you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ “

A Warning against Hypocrisy

121 In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2 For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known. 3 Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.

Whom to Fear

4 And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. 5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him. 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? 7 But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.

Confessing Christ before Men

8 Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God: 9 But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God. 10 And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven. 11 And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say: 12 For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.

The Parable of the Rich Fool

13 And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me. 14 And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you? 15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. 16 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: 17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? 18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. 20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy [1] soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? 21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

Care and Anxiety

22 And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on. 23 The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment. 24 Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls? 25 And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit? 26 If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest? 27 Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 28 If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith? 29 And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither [2] be ye of doubtful mind. 30 For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. 31 But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Treasure in Heaven

32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. 34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Watchful Servants

35 Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning; 36 And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately. 37 Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them. 38 And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. 39 And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through. 40 Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.

The Unfaithful Servant

41 Then Peter said unto him, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us, or even to all? 42 And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season? 43 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. 44 Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath.45 But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken; 46 The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut [3] him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers. 47 And that servant, which knew his lord’s will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. 48 But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

Jesus the Cause of Division

49 I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled?50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened [4] till it be accomplished! 51 Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: 52 For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. 53 The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

Discerning the Times

54 And he said also to the people, When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is. 55 And when ye see the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass. 56 Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time?

Agree with Your Adversary

57 Yea, and why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right? 58 When thou goest with thine adversary to the magistrate, as thou art in the way, give diligence that thou mayest be delivered from him; lest he hale thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee into prison. 59 I tell thee, thou shalt not depart thence, till thou hast paid the very last mite.

Jesus’ Teaching on Prayer

111 And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. 2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. 3 Give us day by day [1] our daily bread. 4 And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. 5 And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves; 6 For a friend of mine in [2] his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him? 7 And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee. 8 I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth. 9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. 10 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. 11 If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? 12 Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer [3] him a scorpion? 13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

A Divided House Cannot Stand

14 And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered. 15 But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub [4] the chief of the devils. 16 And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven. 17 But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth. 18 If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub. 19 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges. 20 But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you. 21 When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: 22 But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils. 23 He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.

The Return of the Unclean Spirit

24 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out. 25 And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished. 26 Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.

True Blessedness

27 And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. 28 But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

An Evil Generation Seeks a Sign

29 And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet. 30 For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation. 31 The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineve shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.

The Light of the Body

33 No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light.34 The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.35 Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness. 36 If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light.

Jesus Denounces the Pharisees and Lawyers

37 And as he spake, a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with him: and he went in, and sat down to meat. 38 And when the Pharisee saw it, he marvelled that he had not first washed before dinner. 39 And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness. 40 Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also? 41 But rather give alms of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you. 42 But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.43 Woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets. 44 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as graves which appear not, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them. 45 Then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him, Master, thus saying thou reproachest us also. 46 And he said, Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! for ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers. 47 Woe unto you! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. 48 Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres. 49 Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute: 50 That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation; 51 From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, which perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation. 52 Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered. [5] 53 And as he said these things unto them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things: 54 Laying wait for him, and seeking to catch something out of his mouth, that they might accuse him.

The Mission of the Twelve

91 When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, 2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. 3 He told them: “Take nothing for the journey-no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt.4 Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. 5 If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” 6 So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere.

The Death of John the Baptist

7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was going on. And he was perplexed because some were saying that John had been raised from the dead, 8 others that Elijah had appeared, and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had come back to life. 9 But Herod said, “I beheaded John. Who, then, is this I hear such things about?” And he tried to see him.

The Feeding of the Five Thousand

10 When the apostles returned, they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by themselves to a town called Bethsaida, 11 but the crowds learned about it and followed him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who needed healing. 12 Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, “Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here.” 13 He replied, “You give them something to eat.”They answered, “We have only five loaves of bread and two fish-unless we go and buy food for all this crowd.” 14 (About five thousand men were there.) But he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 15 The disciples did so, and everyone sat down. 16 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. 17 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.

Peter’s Declaration

18 Once when Jesus was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say I am?” 19 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.” 20 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.”

Jesus Foretells His Death

21 Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone. 22 And he said, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.” 23 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. 25 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self? 26 Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. 27 “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.”

The Transfiguration

28 About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. 29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. 30 Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. 31 They spoke about his departure,[1] which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. 32 Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters-one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.) 34 While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” 36 When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen.

Jesus Heals a Boy with an Unclean Spirit

37 The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. 38 A man in the crowd called out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. 39 A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him. 40 I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they could not.” 41 “You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.” 42 Even while the boy was coming, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the impure spirit, healed the boy and gave him back to his father.

43 And they were all amazed at the greatness of God. While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples,

Jesus Again Foretells His Death

44 “Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.” 45 But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.

Who Is the Greatest?

46 An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest. 47 Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him. 48 Then he said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest.”

He That Is Not against Us Is for Us

49 “Master,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.” 50 “Do not stop him,” Jesus said, “for whoever is not against you is for you.”

Jesus Rebukes James and John

51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. 52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him; 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them[2] ?” 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them. 56 Then he and his disciples went to another village.

The Would-be Followers of Jesus

57 As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” 58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” 59 He said to another man, “Follow me.”But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” 60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.” 62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

1 Now it came to pass, afterward, that He went through every city and village, preaching and bringing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with Him, 2 and certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities–Mary called Magdalene, out of whom had come seven demons, 3 and Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others who provided for Him from their substance.

The Parable of the Sower

4 And when a great multitude had gathered, and they had come to Him from every city, He spoke by a parable: 5 “A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell by the wayside; and it was trampled down, and the birds of the air devoured it. 6 Some fell on rock; and as soon as it sprang up, it withered away because it lacked moisture. 7 And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up with it and choked it. 8 But others fell on good ground, sprang up, and yielded a crop a hundredfold.” When He had said these things He cried, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!” 9 Then His disciples asked Him, saying, “What does this parable mean?” 10 And He said, “To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest it is given in parables, that ‘Seeing they may not see, And hearing they may not understand.’ 11 “Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 12 Those by the wayside are the ones who hear; then the devil comes and takes away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. 13 But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. 14 Now the ones that fell among thorns are those who, when they have heard, go out and are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity. 15 But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience.

A Light under a Vessel

16 “No one, when he has lit a lamp, covers it with a vessel or puts it under a bed, but sets it on a lampstand, that those who enter may see the light. 17 For nothing is secret that will not be revealed, nor anything hidden that will not be known and come to light. 18 Therefore take heed how you hear. For whoever has, to him more will be given; and whoever does not have, even what he seems to have will be taken from him.”

Jesus’ Mother and Brethren

19 Then His mother and brothers came to Him, and could not approach Him because of the crowd. 20 And it was told Him by some, who said, “Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see You.” 21 But He answered and said to them, “My mother and My brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it.”

Jesus Calms a Storm

22 Now it happened, on a certain day, that He got into a boat with His disciples. And He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side of the lake.” And they launched out. 23 But as they sailed He fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water, and were in jeopardy. 24 And they came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” Then He arose and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water. And they ceased, and there was a calm. 25 But He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they were afraid, and marveled, saying to one another, “Who can this be? For He commands even the winds and water, and they obey Him!”

The Gadarene Demoniac Healed

26 Then they sailed to the country of the Gadarenes, which is opposite Galilee. 27 And when He stepped out on the land, there met Him a certain man from the city who had demons for a long time. And he wore no clothes, nor did he live in a house but in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before Him, and with a loud voice said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me!” 29 For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had often seized him, and he was kept under guard, bound with chains and shackles; and he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the wilderness. 30 Jesus asked him, saying, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion,” because many demons had entered him. 31 And they begged Him that He would not command them to go out into the abyss. 32 Now a herd of many swine was feeding there on the mountain. So they begged Him that He would permit them to enter them. And He permitted them. 33 Then the demons went out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the lake and drowned. 34 When those who fed them saw what had happened, they fled and told it in the city and in the country. 35 Then they went out to see what had happened, and came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. 36 They also who had seen it told them by what means he who had been demon-possessed was healed. 37 Then the whole multitude of the surrounding region of the Gadarenes asked Him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. And He got into the boat and returned. 38 Now the man from whom the demons had departed begged Him that he might be with Him. But Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return to your own house, and tell what great things God has done for you.” And he went his way and proclaimed throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him.

Jairus’ Daughter and the Woman Who Touched Jesus’ Garment

40 So it was, when Jesus returned, that the multitude welcomed Him, for they were all waiting for Him. 41 And behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue. And he fell down at Jesus’ feet and begged Him to come to his house, 42 for he had an only daughter about twelve years of age, and she was dying. But as He went, the multitudes thronged Him. 43 Now a woman, having a flow of blood for twelve years, who had spent all her livelihood on physicians and could not be healed by any, 44 came from behind and touched the border of His garment. And immediately her flow of blood stopped. 45 And Jesus said, “Who touched Me?” When all denied it, Peter and those with him said, “Master, the multitudes throng and press You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’ ” 46 But Jesus said, “Somebody touched Me, for I perceived power going out from Me.” 47 Now when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling; and falling down before Him, she declared to Him in the presence of all the people the reason she had touched Him and how she was healed immediately. 48 And He said to her, “Daughter, be of good cheer; your faith has made you well. Go in peace.” 49 While He was still speaking, someone came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house, saying to him, “Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the Teacher.” 50 But when Jesus heard it, He answered him, saying, “Do not be afraid; only believe, and she will be made well.” 51 When He came into the house, He permitted no one to go in except Peter, James, and John, and the father and mother of the girl. 52 Now all wept and mourned for her; but He said, “Do not weep; she is not dead, but sleeping.” 53 And they ridiculed Him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But He put them all outside, took her by the hand and called, saying, “Little girl, arise.” 55 Then her spirit returned, and she arose immediately. And He commanded that she be given something to eat. 56 And her parents were astonished, but He charged them to tell no one what had happened.

DAY 7 Luke December Challenge 2022

A Centurion’s Servant Healed

71 Now when He concluded all His sayings in the hearing of the people, He entered Capernaum. 2 And a certain centurion’s servant, who was dear to him, was sick and ready to die. 3 So when he heard about Jesus, he sent elders of the Jews to Him, pleading with Him to come and heal his servant. 4 And when they came to Jesus, they begged Him earnestly, saying that the one for whom He should do this was deserving, 5 “for he loves our nation, and has built us a synagogue.” 6 Then Jesus went with them. And when He was already not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to Him, saying to Him, “Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof. 7 Therefore I did not even think myself worthy to come to You. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. 8 For I also am a man placed under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 9 When Jesus heard these things, He marveled at him, and turned around and said to the crowd that followed Him, “I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!” 10 And those who were sent, returning to the house, found the servant well who had been sick.

Jesus Raises the Widow’s Son at Nain

11 Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd. 12 And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.” 14 Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” 15 So he who was dead sat up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother. 16 Then fear came upon all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has risen up among us”; and, “God has visited His people.” 17 And this report about Him went throughout all Judea and all the surrounding region.

The Messengers from John the Baptist

18 Then the disciples of John reported to him concerning all these things.

19 And John, calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to Jesus, saying, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?” 20 When the men had come to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, saying, ‘Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?’ ” 21 And that very hour He cured many of infirmities, afflictions, and evil spirits; and to many blind He gave sight. 22 Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them. 23 And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.” 24 When the messengers of John had departed, He began to speak to the multitudes concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 25 But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed those who are gorgeously appareled and live in luxury are in kings’ courts. 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is he of whom it is written: ‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You.’ 28 For I say to you, among those born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” 29 And when all the people heard Him, even the tax collectors justified God, having been baptized with the baptism of John. 30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the will of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him. 31 And the Lord said, “To what then shall I liken the men of this generation, and what are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, saying: ‘We played the flute for you, And you did not dance; We mourned to you, And you did not weep.’ 33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ 35 But wisdom is justified by all her children.”

Jesus at the Home of Simon the Pharisee

36 Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to eat. 37 And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, 38 and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil. 39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself, saying, “This man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner.” 40 And Jesus answered and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” So he said, “Teacher, say it.” 41 “There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.” And He said to him, “You have rightly judged.” 44 Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. 45 You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in. 46 You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil. 47 Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.” 48 Then He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” 49 And those who sat at the table with Him began to say to themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?” 50 Then He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”

The Disciples Pluck Grain on the Sabbath

61 Now it happened on the second Sabbath after the first that He went through the grainfields. And His disciples plucked the heads of grain and ate them, rubbing them in their hands. 2 And some of the Pharisees said to them, “Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?” 3 But Jesus answering them said, “Have you not even read this, what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: 4 how he went into the house of God, took and ate the showbread, and also gave some to those with him, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat?” 5 And He said to them, “The Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.”

The Man with a Withered Hand

6 Now it happened on another Sabbath, also, that He entered the synagogue and taught. And a man was there whose right hand was withered. 7 So the scribes and Pharisees watched Him closely, whether He would heal on the Sabbath, that they might find an accusation against Him. 8 But He knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, “Arise and stand here.” And he arose and stood. 9 Then Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one thing: Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy?” 10 And when He had looked around at them all, He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored as whole as the other. 11 But they were filled with rage, and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.

Jesus Chooses the Twelve

12 Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. 13 And when it was day, He called His disciples to Himself; and from them He chose twelve whom He also named apostles: 14 Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew; 15 Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called the Zealot; 16 Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot who also became a traitor.

Jesus Ministers to a Great Multitude

17 And He came down with them and stood on a level place with a crowd of His disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear Him and be healed of their diseases, 18 as well as those who were tormented with unclean spirits. And they were healed. 19 And the whole multitude sought to touch Him, for power went out from Him and healed them all.

Blessings and Woes

20 Then He lifted up His eyes toward His disciples, and said: “Blessed are you poor, For yours is the kingdom of God. 21 Blessed are you who hunger now, For you shall be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, For you shall laugh. 22 Blessed are you when men hate you, And when they exclude you, And revile you, and cast out your name as evil, For the Son of Man’s sake. 23 Rejoice in that day and leap for joy! For indeed your reward is great in heaven, For in like manner their fathers did to the prophets. 24 But woe to you who are rich, For you have received your consolation. 25 Woe to you who are full, For you shall hunger. Woe to you who laugh now, For you shall mourn and weep. 26 Woe to you when all men speak well of you, For so did their fathers to the false prophets.

Love for Enemies

27 “But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you. 29 To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either. 30 Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back. 31 And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise. 32 But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back. 35 But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. 36 Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.

Judging Others

37 “Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38 Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.” 39 And He spoke a parable to them: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into the ditch? 40 A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher. 41 And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the plank in your own eye? 42 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the plank that is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck that is in your brother’s eye.

A Tree Is Known by Its Fruit

43 “For a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 For every tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush. 45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

The House Built on a Rock

46 “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do the things which I say? 47 Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: 48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock. 49 But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.”

The Great Catch of Fish

51 So it was, as the multitude pressed about Him to hear the word of God, that He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret, 2 and saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets. 3 Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat. 4 When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.” 6 And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. 7 So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!” 9 For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken; 10 and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men.” 11 So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook all and followed Him.

Jesus Cleanses a Leper

12 And it happened when He was in a certain city, that behold, a man who was full of leprosy saw Jesus; and he fell on his face and implored Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” 13 Then He put out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” Immediately the leprosy left him. 14 And He charged him to tell no one, “But go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, as a testimony to them, just as Moses commanded.” 15 However, the report went around concerning Him all the more; and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by Him of their infirmities. 16 So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed.

Jesus Heals a Palsied Man

17 Now it happened on a certain day, as He was teaching, that there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come out of every town of Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present to heal them. 18 Then behold, men brought on a bed a man who was paralyzed, whom they sought to bring in and lay before Him. 19 And when they could not find how they might bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the housetop and let him down with his bed through the tiling into the midst before Jesus. 20 When He saw their faith, He said to him, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.” 21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 22 But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, He answered and said to them, “Why are you reasoning in your hearts? 23 Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise up and walk’? 24 But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”–He said to the man who was paralyzed, “I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.” 25 Immediately he rose up before them, took up what he had been lying on, and departed to his own house, glorifying God. 26 And they were all amazed, and they glorified God and were filled with fear, saying, “We have seen strange things today!”

The Call of Levi

27 After these things He went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, “Follow Me.” 28 So he left all, rose up, and followed Him. 29 Then Levi gave Him a great feast in his own house. And there were a great number of tax collectors and others who sat down with them. 30 And their scribes and the Pharisees complained against His disciples, saying, “Why do You eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” 31 Jesus answered and said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”

The Question about Fasting

33 Then they said to Him, “Why do the disciples of John fast often and make prayers, and likewise those of the Pharisees, but Yours eat and drink?” 34 And He said to them, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them? 35 But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them; then they will fast in those days.” 36 Then He spoke a parable to them: “No one puts a piece from a new garment on an old one; otherwise the new makes a tear, and also the piece that was taken out of the new does not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined. 38 But new wine must be put into new wineskins, and both are preserved. 39 And no one, having drunk old wine, immediately desires new; for he says, ‘The old is better.’ “

LUKE CHAPTER 3

The Preaching of John the Baptist

31 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, 2 while Annas and Caiaphas were high priests, the word of God came to John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. 3 And he went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins, 4 as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying: “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; Make His paths straight. 5 Every valley shall be filled And every mountain and hill brought low; The crooked places shall be made straight And the rough ways smooth; 6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’ ” 7 Then he said to the multitudes that came out to be baptized by him, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. 9 And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.” 10 So the people asked him, saying, “What shall we do then?” 11 He answered and said to them, “He who has two tunics, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise.” 12 Then tax collectors also came to be baptized, and said to him, “Teacher, what shall we do?” 13 And he said to them, “Collect no more than what is appointed for you.” 14 Likewise the soldiers asked him, saying, “And what shall we do?” So he said to them, “Do not intimidate anyone or accuse falsely, and be content with your wages.”

15 Now as the people were in expectation, and all reasoned in their hearts about John, whether he was the Christ or not, 16 John answered, saying to all, “I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather the wheat into His barn; but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire.” 18 And with many other exhortations he preached to the people. 19 But Herod the tetrarch, being rebuked by him concerning Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, 20 also added this, above all, that he shut John up in prison.

The Baptism of Jesus

21 When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. 22 And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”

The Genealogy of Jesus

23 Now Jesus Himself began His ministry at about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, the son of Heli, 24 the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Janna, the son of Joseph, 25 the son of Mattathiah, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai, 26 the son of Maath, the son of Mattathiah, the son of Semei, the son of Joseph, the son of Judah, 27 the son of Joannas, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, the son of Neri, 28 the son of Melchi, the son of Addi, the son of Cosam, the son of Elmodam, the son of Er, 29 the son of Jose, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, 30 the son of Simeon, the son of Judah, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonan, the son of Eliakim, 31 the son of Melea, the son of Menan, the son of Mattathah, the son of Nathan, the son of David, 32 the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Salmon, the son of Nahshon, 33 the son of Amminadab, the son of Ram, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah, 34 the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor, 35 the son of Serug, the son of Reu, the son of Peleg, the son of Eber, the son of Shelah, 36 the son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech, 37 the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalalel, the son of Cainan, 38 the son of Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.

Christ Born of Mary

And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city.

Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed [a]wife, who was with child. So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a [b]manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

Glory in the Highest

Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And [c]behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. 10 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a [d]manger.”

13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:

14 “Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace, goodwill[e] toward men!”

15 So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, “Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger. 17 Now when they had seen Him, they made [f]widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child. 18 And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds. 19 But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them.

Circumcision of Jesus

21 And when eight days were completed [g]for the circumcision of the Child, His name was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.

Jesus Presented in the Temple

22 Now when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were completed, they brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”), 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, “A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”

Simeon Sees God’s Salvation

25 And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27 So he came by the Spirit into the temple. And when the parents brought in the Child Jesus, to do for Him according to the custom of the law, 28 he took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said:

29 “Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace,
According to Your word;
30 For my eyes have seen Your salvation
31 Which You have prepared before the face of all peoples,
32 A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles,
And the glory of Your people Israel.”

33 [h]And Joseph and His mother marveled at those things which were spoken of Him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary His mother, “Behold, this Child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which will be spoken against 35 (yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

Anna Bears Witness to the Redeemer

36 Now there was one, Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity; 37 and this woman was a widow [i]of about eighty-four years, who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. 38 And coming in that instant she gave thanks to [j]the Lord, and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

The Family Returns to Nazareth

39 So when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own city, Nazareth. 40 And the Child grew and became strong [k]in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him.

The Boy Jesus Amazes the Scholars

41 His parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. 42 And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast. 43 When they had finished the days, as they returned, the Boy Jesus lingered behind in Jerusalem. And [l]Joseph and His mother did not know it; 44 but supposing Him to have been in the company, they went a day’s journey, and sought Him among their relatives and acquaintances. 45 So when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking Him. 46 Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers. 48 So when they saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously.”

49 And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” 50 But they did not understand the statement which He spoke to them.

Jesus Advances in Wisdom and Favor

51 Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was [m]subject to them, but His mother kept all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

Inspired by the hymn, COME, THOU LONG EXPECTED JESUS

Come, thou long expected Jesus,
born to set thy people free;
from our fears and sins release us,
let us find our rest in thee.
Israel’s strength and consolation,
hope of all the earth thou art;
dear desire of every nation,
joy of every longing heart.

Born thy people to deliver,
born a child and yet a King,
born to reign in us forever,
now thy gracious kingdom bring.
By thine own eternal spirit
rule in all our hearts alone;
by thine all sufficient merit,
raise us to thy glorious throne.

Groaning Believer, Take Heart!

Don’t be perplexed that you are still groaning even as a redeemed child of God; Instead, be encouraged by the blessed assurance of His presence and the foretaste of glory it gives.

Tap ‘Listen in browser’ to play

Good morning, dear Christian pilgrim.

Did our Lord come to make all things right in this world? No. Rather, He came to give believers a foretaste of glory divine, a taste of heaven before heaven.

That is why, despite fervent prayers offered by faith and in the name of Jesus, countless believers have died from sicknesses and diseases, many remain in pains and are suffering from sicknesses and diseases, others have prayer requests that remain unanswered even after months, years and decades of fervency in prayers, and some are daily oppressed by the grip of besetting sins.

Yes, many of us are still groaning in physical pain, experiencing episodes of sorrow, still helpless against besetting sins, and still gripped by anxieties and fears from time to time because what we have right now is just a glimpse, a preview, just a taste, a foretaste of glory divine.

And so, in Romans 8:23, the apostle wrote, saying, Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body.

Listen to it again, now from the NLT, Rom 8:23: And we believers also groan, even though we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering. We, too, wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as his adopted children, including the new bodies he has promised us

So, as a redeemed child of God who has fellowship with the Holy Spirt and a foretaste of future of glory, are you still groaning in physical pain? Are you sad and sorrowing? Are you in the grip of anxieties and fears? Are you tormented and oppressed by besetting sins? You are not alone. And you know what? That foretaste, that taste, that preview of future glory that Jesus has given you is enough, more than enough to carry you through.

And what is this foretaste, this preview of future glory? It is the companionship and presence of Jesus Christ every step of your pilgrimage. You are the Lord’s, the apple of His eyes (Zech 2:8) and He is for you (Romans 8:31). Indeed, this blessed assurance of having the Lord on your side even while groaning is what the hymn writer called a foretaste of glory divine.

When you pass through the valley of the shadow of death, His presence will give you a foretaste of glory divine, you will not be afraid. Ps. 23:4

You will safely pass through waters, rivers will not overwhelm you, fires will not scorch you and flames will not set you ablaze because of the blessed assurance of His presence which gives a foretaste of glory divine (Is. 43:2)

When troubles and fears and anxieties assail you, when your prayers are unanswered, He will give you the peace that passess all human understanding (John 14:27) and His presence will rebuke the storms of life for you (Mark 4:41)

When you fall into sin, the blessed assurance that He will plead on your behalf will guarantee your forgiveness and cleansing and restoration.(1 John 2:1)

Dear pilgrim, Don’t be perplexed that you are still groaning even as a redeemed child of God; Instead, be encouraged by the blessed assurance of His presence and the foretaste of glory it gives.

So, like the saints who have gone before you, including this hymnwriter who, at infancy, was made blind by the recklessness of a quack doctor, but who nevertheless went on to have a rich and fulfilling life, writing more than 9,000 hymns, like her and the countless saints before you, let this be your declaration and confession even if you are still groaning:

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
born of his Spirit, washed in his blood.

Refrain:
This is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long.
This is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long
.

Perfect communion, perfect delight,
visions of rapture now burst on my sight.
Angels descending bring from above
echoes of mercy, whispers of love

This is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long.
This is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long
.

Perfect submission, all is at rest.
I in my Savior am happy and bless’d,
watching and waiting, looking above,
filled with his goodness, lost in his love
.

This is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long.
This is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long

Let us pray:

May your Lord’s presence fill your mouth with unending songs of praise that will drown your pains, sorrows and anxieties in Jesus name. Amen.

Do These Questions Bother You?

Most times, anxieties about tomorrow consume our thoughts and sometimes, they paralyse us.

Tap ‘Listen in browser’ to play.

Do you sometimes worry about what will happen tomorrow, next week, next month, next year?

Most times, anxieties about tomorrow consume our thoughts and sometimes, they paralyse us. What will our future be? What will the future of our children be? Will we be able to meet financial obligations? Will our health hold up? Will family squabbles be resolved? Will our prayers be answered? Will our projects succeed? Will our friends prove reliable? What will our future be? And sometimes, how long are we going to live?

When these thoughts fill our hearts, o that we will be reminded of who our God is: the One who knows the end from the beginning, the One whose purpose, whose will, will stand. (Is. 46:10.)

Yes, when the fear of the unknown tomorrow paralyses us, o that we will be reminded of God’s assurance in Jer. 29:11 – “I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

When needs and obligations seem to overwhelm, o that we will be led to Phil 4:19 where the apostle assures all who trust in Jesus that God will meet all their needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.

Indeed, in times of looming trouble and fear, o that we will hear the words of our Christ in John 16:33: I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

How sweet to hold a newborn baby
And feel the pride and joy He gives
But greater still the calm assurance
This child can face uncertain day, because He lives

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow
Because He lives, all fear is gone
Because I know He holds the future
And life is worth the living, just because He lives

Dear sister, dear brother, you did not bring yourself this far; God did. You cannot take yourself to the next minute or the next hour or to next month or next year; only God can. Commit your life anew to Him who has conquered life and death. Stop worrying about uncertain days. Instead, start seeking Him who controls the past, the present and the future. Seek to know Him more, seek to please Him more, spend time with Him in prayer and Bible study and you know what? Those uncertain days will break with blessings on your head.

Let us pray.

O Lord God Almighty, please calm our fears and silence all anxious thoughts in our hearts. Like the Psalmist, teach us, o Lord to say: whenever I am afraid, I will trust in God. And whenever we turn to You, let your peace which passes all understanding guard our hearts and minds. In Jesus name, Amen.

Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken!

SundayHymns on GospelBellsRadio. In this episode: Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken; I am Thine, O Lord; Redeemed, How I Love to Proclaim It!

Trumpet Solo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRtftQ_awac

Opening Psalm: Psalm 87

His foundation is in the holy mountains.
The Lord loves the gates of Zion
More than all the dwellings of Jacob.
Glorious things are spoken of you,
O city of God! Selah

“I will make mention of [a]Rahab and Babylon to those who know Me;
Behold, O Philistia and Tyre, with Ethiopia:
‘This one was born there.’ ”

And of Zion it will be said,
“This one and that one were born in her;
And the Most High Himself shall establish her.”
The Lord will record,
When He registers the peoples:
“This one was born there.” Selah

Both the singers and the players on instruments say,
“All my springs are in you.”

Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken (Words by John Newton. Tune; Abbot’s Leigh)

Glorious things of Thee are spoken,

Zion, city of our God;
he whose word cannot be broken
formed you for his own abode.
On the Rock of Ages founded,
what can shake your sure repose?
With salvation’s walls surrounded,
you may smile at all your foes.

2 See, the streams of living waters,
springing from eternal love,
well supply your sons and daughters
and all fear of want remove.
Who can faint while such a river
ever will their thirst assuage?
Grace which, like the Lord, the giver,
never fails from age to age.

3. Savior, since of Zion’s city
I thro’ grace a member am,
let the world deride or pity,
I will glory in your name.
Fading are the world’s vain pleasures,
all their boasted pomp and show;
solid joys and lasting treasures
none but Zion’s children know.

I am Thine, O Lord. (Words by Fanny Crosby)

1 I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice,
And it told Thy love to me;
But I long to rise in the arms of faith,
And be closer drawn to Thee.

Refrain:
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,
To the cross where Thou hast died;
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,
To Thy precious, bleeding side.

2 Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord,
By the pow’r of grace divine;
Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope,
And my will be lost in Thine. [Refrain]

3 Oh, the pure delight of a single hour
That before Thy throne I spend,
When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee, my God,
I commune as friend with friend! [Refrain]

4 There are depths of love that I cannot know
Till I cross the narrow sea;
There are heights of joy that I may not reach
Till I rest in peace with Thee. [Refrain]

Redeemed, How I Love to Proclaim It! (Words by Fanny Crosby)

Verse 1
Redeemed, how I love to proclaim it!
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed through His infinite mercy,
His child and forever I am.

Chorus
Redeemed, redeemed,
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed, redeemed,
His child and forever I am.

Verse 2
Redeemed, and so happy in Jesus,
No language my rapture can tell;
I know that the light of His presence
With me doth continually dwell.

Chorus
Redeemed, redeemed,
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed, redeemed,
His child and forever I am.

Verse 3
I think of my blessed Redeemer,
I think of Him all the day long:
I sing, for I cannot be silent;
His love is the theme of my song.

Chorus
Redeemed, redeemed,
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed, redeemed,
His child and forever I am.

Verse 5
I know I shall see in His beauty
The King in whose law I delight,
Who lovingly guardeth my footsteps,
And giveth me songs in the night.

Chorus
Redeemed, redeemed,
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed, redeemed,
His child and forever I am.

INDESTRUCTIBLE

From your first cry as a baby and to your final breath, and unto eternity, Jesus commands your destiny. Be comforted and be encouraged by this.

Tap ‘Listen in browser’ to play

There are ample passages in the Bible telling us in absolutely clear terms that God knew His people before they were born, that God knows every little detail of their lives, and that God already has an indestructible plan for them after life.

So, as a Christian pilgrim, do not let the vagaries of life, do not let the ups and downs of life, do not let your past sins and your current challenges define you or define your future. From your first cry as a baby and to your final breath, and unto eternity, Jesus commands your destiny. Be comforted and be encouraged by this.

No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life’s first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand
. – Keith Getty/Stuart Townsend

So, this is an invitation to stand and to remain in Christ all the days of your life. Don’t waver. Don’t waver. In Isaiah 44, verse 24, God described himself as the Lord your Redeemer, who formed you from the womb. The Lord who formed you from the womb. It is true. Take him at His word and believe Him. Even Apostle Paul, after he had come to faith in Jesus Christ having previously made many egregious mistakes in life, he wrote in Galatians 1:15 that God had set him apart before he was born; before he was born!

In Psalm 139, David testified under the Holy Spirit’s inspiration that God knows and God is familiar with all his ways. Dear pilgrim, it is true! God is familiar with all your ways. He is familiar with all your ways. He knows about them all.Relax, rejoice and take confidence in this.

Jesus testified of this as well, saying in Matthew 6:8 that “your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask Him.” And this validates what the Psalmist wrote in Psalm 38:9: “O Lord, my every desire is before you. My groaning is not hidden from you”

So you see, all of your ways, your needs, your innermost cries for help, they are all known to Him who commands your destiny. And what is more, in John 10: 39, Jesus said of you and of the other pilgrims: “My Father who has given them to me is greater than all. No one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.” My Father is greater than all of them, than the schemes of men, than the powers of hell, than Satan, than all his demons, than all the ups and downs and challenges of life. My Father who gave them to me, said Jesus Christ, is greater than all. No one, no one, nothing can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.

So you see, no one can snatch you out of God’s hand. So the Spirit says to you again, do not let the vagaries of life, its upsand downs, your past sins, your current challenges, do not let them define you or define your future. Do not let demonic powers and evil forces scare you. Don’t let life lead you to worship other gods or to give up. Keep loving and honoring the Lord. Keep serving Him. Keep seeking His will in prayers and Bible studies. Stand in the power of Christ and Christ the Lord and you will find that He is able to keep you from stumbling in life and He is able to present you faultless  before the mighty throne of God. Why? Because from your first cry as a baby until final breath and unto eternity, Jesus commands your destiny.

No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life’s first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand
. – Keith Getty/Stuart Townsend

May the knowledge of God’s total charge over your life comfort and strengthen you in Jesus name. Amen!

GOD-GIVEN

…whatever your days might bring, your strength, your God-given strength will rise to the occasion!

Tap ‘Listen in browser’ to play.

Dear Christian pilgrim, are there scary clouds forming ahead? Are there high mountains or your path? Is your path presently dark? Is the work ahead much? Here is what the Holy Spirit is saying to you today: “All is well. All is well.”

And you may ask ‘hey, how would you know that all is well?’ Here’s the answer: All is well because your Lord, your Lord God Almighty has pledged in Is. 43 saying, “when you pass through the waters, I will be with you and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, it will not set you ablaze. Since you are precious and honored in my sight and because I love you, I will give people in exchange for you, nations in exchange for your life. Do not be afraid for I am with you.”

That’s your Lord’s pledge from Is. 43. So,

Come, come, ye Saints, no toil nor labor fear;

But with joy wend your way.

Though hard to you this journey may appear,

Grace shall be as your day.

’Tis better far for us to strive

Our useless cares from us to drive;

Do this, and joy your hearts will swell—

All is well! All is well!

And,

Why should we mourn or think our lot is hard?

’Tis not so; all is right.

Why should we think to earn a great reward

If we now shun the fight?

Gird up your loins; fresh courage take.

Our God will never us forsake;

And soon we’ll have this tale to tell—

All is well! All is well!

Dear pilgrim, remember the blessing that the Lord bestowed on His people from the mouth of Moses in Deuteronomy 33? Remember that? That same blessing, He is bestowing on you right now. Recall it?

The bolts of your gates will be iron and bronze,
    and your strength will equal your days.

“There is no one like the God of Jeshurun,
    who rides across the heavens to help you
    and on the clouds in his majesty.
The eternal God is your refuge,
    and underneath are the everlasting arms.
He will drive out your enemies before you,
    saying, ‘Destroy them!’

“Your strength will equal your days” meaning whatever your days might bring, your strength, your God-given strength will rise to the occasion. So,

Why should we mourn or think our lot is hard?

’Tis not so; all is right.

Why should we think to earn a great reward

If we now shun the fight?

Gird up your loins; fresh courage take.

Our God will never us forsake;

And soon we’ll have this tale to tell—

All is well! All is well!

Let us pray.

May the assurance of God’s abiding presence grant you the strength and courage to confront and overcome. In Jesus name. Amen.

The Audacity to Ask!

Brethren, at the end of day, the difference between a victorious Christian and an unbeliever is the Christian’s audacity to ask. The audacity to ask for forgiveness and the audacity to ask for undeserved favours.

Yes, Audacity is a word we must use carefully because it has both positive and negative connotations; yet it is just the right word to describe the kind of courage, the kind of confidence that makes any human being suppose that he or she  has the right to ask God for anything. God: high, exalted, and holy. And us: sinful in nature, sinful in words, thoughts and deed. How dare we suppose we have access to such a great and mighty God? What audacity!

Brethren, if your imperfections or confessed sins ever make you hear a voice saying how dare you suppose that you have access to God or what audacity you have to ask for help in spite of your own foolish mistakes, your answer should be summed up in the words of this hymn: Jesus Paid it All!Jesus paid it all,All to Him I owe;Sin had left a crimson stain,He washed it white as snow.

Yes, Jesus paid it all! Jesus paid it all! That is the Christian’s answer to any voice saying: how dare you suppose you have access to God or what audacity to suppose you can ask Him for help? That is the Christian’s answer: Jesus paid it all!

Have you not read from Hebrews 4:15 that we can and should and are invited to approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.  WHY? Because our great high priest, who understands our weaknesses, who was also tempted but did not sin, He has paid it all. He has paid it all. He has paid it all. He has paid it all.

Brethren, we have not because we ask not (James 4:2) and often times, we ask not because we lack the courage, the audacity to ask. Sin holds us back. Past mistakes and errors hold us back. And they should. Because sin separates us from the mighty works of God (IS. 59:1).But Jesus has paid for our sins and whenever we summon the audacity to go God, not in our names, not in our own right, but in the name of Jesus, in the righteousness of Jesus, and we confess our sins and unworthiness and repent, we will hear the good news: there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1)

So, if you find yourself lacking the confidence to approach God’s throne because you feel so undeserving of God’s love and help, let this be your song and the source of your audacity to ask:I hear the Savior say,”Thy strength indeed is small,Child of weakness, watch and pray,Find in Me thine all in all.”Jesus paid it all,All to Him I owe;Sin had left a crimson stain,He washed it white as snow.

Father, we thank you for the gift of our Lord and savior, Jesus Christ, who died and paid for our access to Your holy presence. Please grant that Your Holy Spirit will always remind us that our access to You has been paid for and paid for in full so much so that the guilt of sin will never hold us back from having the courage, the confidence and even the audacity to ask for forgiveness and to ask for help. In Jesus name, Amen.

BE VERY SURE

Once Jesus Remains the Foundation, Let the Times Bring Whatever They Might…

Tap the ‘play’ button to listen.

In Matt. 6:32, Jesus taught us not to be anxious about the times of our lives, because our heavenly Father knows about our needs and circumstances even before we ask. Instead, the Lord counselled us to first seek the kingdom of God. Every other thing will then be added to us by the God who knows us and understands our circumstances more than we do.

Brothers and sisters, it may not readily appear so, but the Christian’s first port of call in all times and seasons of life is to take the 2 Cor. 13: 5 test: examine whether He or she is in Christ Jesus; whether He or she is firmly anchored to the Rock that is Jesus Christ; whether He or she is in the will of Christ.

Once that is the case, once Jesus remains the foundation, let the times and seasons bring whatever they might, the God who owns the earth and all its fullness (psalm 24) will add and supply all that is needed to confront and overcome and prevail and thrive in whatever times and seasons we find ourselves. Phil. 4:19.

In times like these you need a Savior,
In times like these you need an anchor;
Be very sure, be very sure,
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

This Rock is Jesus, Yes He’s the One,
This Rock is Jesus, the only One;
Be very sure, be very sure,
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock
!

Yes, this rock is Jesus. Examine whether you are in Him and He in you and whether you are walking according to His will and then you will find that in His name, you have access to the presence of the God who owns the earth and all its fullness, the God who directs the hearts and minds of kings and princes. Prov.21.

Examine whether you are in Him and you will find that He was before ALL things and in Him ALL things hold together. Col. 1:17.

Yes, the rock is Jesus:  confess, worship and abide in Him to whom all authority on earth and in heaven has been given and you will find that, at the mention of His name every knee will bow, whether of things in heaven or on earth or underneath the earth. Phil. 2:10.

This is why the Holy Spirit reminds you this morning of the ONE ANSWER to all the times and seasons of our lives: Jesus Christ.

Are you just opening a new chapter and you’re wondering whether you’ve made the right decision? Or have you been on the same spot for far too long and wondering when your prayers will be answered? Are you lonely? Are you sad? Are you in dire need? Or have your prayers been answered and you’re anxious that the blessings be made permanent?

In times like the ones you are passing through, the One Answer to all your questions and anxieties is JESUS CHRIST. Examine yourself whether you are anchored to Him, whether you have placed your faith in Him as Lord and Saviour, and whether you are walking in His will. Once that is the case, take this to the bank: the wisdom, the guidance, the strength, the favours, the provision, the healing, the intervention, the comfort and the sustenance you need to confront and thrive in times such as these will be given to you.

That’s Matt. 6:33 and, yes, you can take it to the bank.

Let us pray.

Lord, this morning as with all the times and seasons of our lives, we confess that we need You to be the Lord and ruler of our lives. Please keep us firmly anchored in You. Keep us in Your will and then grant us the calm assurance that every other thing we need for the different times and seasons of life will be added to us. We ask in faith and in the name of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Trust In His Steadfast Love: It Will Never Fail!

He who gave His son up for you, would He let the Devil have the final say on your life?

Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God.

Good morning, dear Christian Pilgrim and thank you for tuning in to listen today.

In John chapter1 verse 12, we are reminded of the core mission of our Lord Jesus Christ when He came to earth. It says: “But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.”

That’s you, you know? Having believed Him and accepted Him, you now have the right and power to be called the child of God! And in John 3:16, we read that it is the love of God that made this possible so much so that in 1 John 3:1, the apostle wrote saying, Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God! The New Living Translation saysSee how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are!

See how very much our father loves us. Behold what manner of love the Father has given unto us. And This morning, the Holy Spirt calls on you, implores you to TRUST IN HIS LOVE. In Psalm 13:5, the psalmist said:“But I have trusted in your steadfast love, my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.”

Dear Pilgrim, Trust in His love: He who has made you His own child, would He forsake you? Trust in his love: He who has called you His own, would HE cast you away? Trust in his love: He who gave His son up for you, would He let the Devil have the final say on your life?

Trust in His steadfast love: Anytime the guilt of sin overwhelms you, behold, call to mind, remember the manner of love with which He has loved you, He will forgive if you confess and repent.

Trust in His steadfast love: Anytime the burdens and cares of this world or any earthly affliction threaten top consume you, behold, remember, call to mind the manner of love with which He has loved you: He will give you rest and perfect peace if you cast all your cares on Him by faith in the hour of prayer.

Trust in His love: It will never fail.

Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!

Let us pray.

Dear Lord, please tune our hearts to always remember and rejoice and take courage in the everlasting love with which you have loved us from before the beginning of the world. In Jesus name, Amen.

What do you call the One who gives your world all of its joys and brightness?

Sun of my soul, thou Savior dear,

it is not night if thou be near;

O may no earthborn cloud arise

to hide thee from thy servant’s eyes

– John Keble

Those whose lives have been turned into one bright and shining light would readily know why He is the SUN of the pilgrim’s soul. The sinner’s soul darkened by sin becomes a clean and healthy home of righteousness when the Sun shines into it.  The guilty condemned to death and eternal damnation receives the joyful gift of pardon when the Sun shines on him. The pilgrim who is perplexed with life and the many choices before him receives clarity when the Sun shines on his path. The one oppressed by sin and Satan is relieved of the heavy burdens of oppression and guilt when the Sun melts his burdens away. The pilgrim whose heart is made heavy by the death of a loved one or by sickness or the fear of death will smile once more if he would open his heart to the Sunshine.

Indeed, God is as the Sun that dispels the darkness. John 1:5. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. Malachi 4:2. But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays. And you will go out and frolic like well-fed calves.

He is the Sun that brightens the day. He is the Sun whose appearance is certain and sure no matter how long the dark night has been. He is the Sun whose benevolent rays stimulates growth.  He is the Sun from who whom nothing is hidden. He is the Sun that gives life and light. He is the Sun that sets lukewarm souls on fire. He is the Sun that clears the day for the fellowship of brethren.

And He is not only Sunlight to your soul, He is also your savior who loves you dearly. When He chased the darkness away, He also saved you from the power of the darkness forever.  When He made you fruitful, He also saved you from the curse of fruitlessness. When He set your soul aflame for His worship, He also saved you from the shackles of the worship of idols and Satan. He is the light that saves. He is the Sun of the pilgrim’s soul and his dear saviour. The pilgrim who opens his heart to this Sun and loving Saviour is blessed beyond measure. Be that pilgrim. Be the pilgrim who opens his heart, her heart to this Sun and loving Saviour.

Sun of my soul, thou Savior dear,

it is not night if thou be near;

O may no earthborn cloud arise

to hide thee from thy servant’s eyes

– John Keble

Dear Lord, we worship you as the Sun of our souls and our dear Saviour. We confess you as the source of all things bright and beautiful. Please make beautiful things out of our lives. In Jesus name, Amen.

I know who did it! I know Her name!

Tap the ‘play’ button to listen,

Dear Christian pilgrim, have you ever wondered why you are able to see the danger and horror of sin while many others don’t? Why you are always afraid to sin against God while many have no qualms about it? I know who made you like that: her name is Grace, the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

And she has done much more! Not only has Grace turned your heart of stone to a heart of flesh that fears the Lord and grieves for sin, the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ has also made it possible for you to be cleansed of sin and be forgiven.

In 1 Corinthians 6 from verse 9, the apostle made a list of the sinners that will not inherit the kingdom of God. He wrote that, “Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men[a] 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

And then in verse 11, he wrote that: “And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”

Again, in Ephesians 2, the apostle wrote that: As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.”

Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
and grace my fears relieved;
how precious did that grace appear
the hour I first believed!
– John Newton

Dear Christian pilgrim don’t think yourself superior to those languishing in sin without qualms. Instead thank God for the grace that saved you: But for the grace of God, you would be in their number.

Don’t also think yourself deserving of the grace of salvation: For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.

Finally, don’t ever forget the blessings that Grace has bought for you: the cleansing and forgiveness of your sins, access to God’s throne of mercy in the time of prayer, and the privilege of fellowshipping with God as a child would enjoy the company of a loving and good father, the privilege of saying, Abba Father.

Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
and grace my fears relieved;
how precious did that grace appear
the hour I first believed!
– John Newton

Dear Lord, may we never cease to be amazed by Your Grace that saved us, cleanses us from all unrighteousness, and gives us the privilege of calling you Abba Father. May it please You that that Grace will reach all our loved ones who are still languishing in sin. In Jesus name. Amen.

Do the good you can do. Do it now. Do it before the night comes.

Tap ‘Listen in browser’ to play

Dear Christian pilgrim, closer to you than you may think are people, relationships, and souls that you can touch for good.

The thoughtless Christian says, “there is nothing I can do.” The presumptuous Christian, thinking he has all the time in the world says, “I’ll do what I can later,” and the self-absorbed Christian, when asked why he didn’t do anything, says, “I didn’t think my attention was needed.” But you, o that you will realise that:

There are lonely hearts to cherish,
While the days are going by;
There are weary souls who perish,
While the days are going by;
If a smile we can renew,
As our journey we pursue,
O, the good we all may do,
While the days are going by!

Refrain:
Going by, going by,
Going by, going by;
O, the good we all may do,
While the days are going by!
– George Cooper

Do not say, “there is nothing I can do,” for you can give your widow’s mite, you can pray, you can place a call, you can send a text, you can give the gift of a smile. As that other hymnwriter puts it, whatever – no matter how small – you give for Jesus’ sake will be precious in His sight.

And please, do not say, “I’ll do it later.” Rather, be like your Lord in appreciating the urgency of kingdom work. He said, “I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.”

The days are going by, and the night is inexorably approaching. O, that you will listen to the Holy Spirit and do that good He has asked you to do and do it today, do it now. Give the gift now and meet that need now. “Do not say to your neighbor, ‘Go, and come back, And tomorrow I will give it,’ When you have it with you.”

Pray for those the Holy Spirit puts on your mind: The fervent prayer of the righteous avails much.

Visit the sick, the elderly, and those in prison. Find the time. They are the brothers and sisters of Christ. And you would be doing the work of Christ on His behalf.

Do the good you can do. Do it before the days go by. Do it before the night comes. Do it now so that your portion will not be that of the wicked to whom the Lord will say: “I was a stranger, and you did not take Me in, I was naked, and you did not clothe Me, I was sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.”

There’s no time for idle scorning,
While the days are going by;
Let your face be like the morning,
While the days are going by;
For the world is full of sighs,
Full of sad and weeping eyes;
Help your fallen brother rise,
While the days are going by.

Refrain:
Going by, going by,
Going by, going by;
O, the good we all may do,
While the days are going by!
– George Cooper

Let us pray. Lord, please open our eyes to see the countless ways we can be sources of blessings to others. Please lay burdens on our hearts to reach out to those in need, and teach us to number our days so that we may go about Your business with urgency and dispatch. In Jesus name, Amen.

What Would You Do If You Truly Believed?

Lord, we have resolved to live our lives as those who have the assurance of your constant and abiding care. Please increase our faith and let us not be put to shame. In Jesus name, Amen.

Tap play to listen.

Dear Christian pilgrim, if you truly believed that God would take care of you whatever betide, what would you do?  Would you brighten up and be of good cheer, notwithstanding that things are still tough? Would you say: “For this reason, even though I suffer as I do, I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him for that day.”

You see, the case of the unbeliever is pathetic, but logical: He doesn’t believe! So, there no basis for engagement. But the case of the believer who believes, but doesn’t truly believe is worse. That believer hears God saying: “I will never leave you, neither will I forsake you.” He doesn’t dispute that it is the word of God, but hearing it makes no difference; he continues to be dismayed and forlorn and sad and dejected.

That believer hears the Lord say: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.” She believes it, but not enough to stand up and take bold steps of faith.

Don’t be that type of believer. Hear the Holy Spirit reminding you today to truly believe that God will take care of you:

Be not dismayed whate’er betide,
God will take care of you;
Beneath his wings of love abide,
God will take care of you.

Refrain:
God will take care of you,
through ev’ry day, o’er all the way;
He will take care of you,
God will take care of you.
 Civilla D. Martin (1904)

Do you truly believe that He will take care of you whatever be the case? If your answer is “Yes, I believe,” then, please let it show: Be of good cheer and smile, He has overcome the world.

Do you truly believe that He will take care of you whatever be the case? Then worry not about tomorrow: He will supply your needs according to His riches in glory.

Do you truly believe that He will take care of you whatever be the case? The, boldly identify with him, telling the world that He alone is your plan A to Z since you know that “Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.”

Do you truly believe that He will take care of you? Then, don’t let present circumstances discourage you or make you ashamed of your faith in Jesus Christ. Rather, like the apostle, say, “even though I suffer as I do, I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him for that day.”

Be not dismayed whate’er betide,
God will take care of you;
Beneath his wings of love abide,
God will take care of you.

Refrain:
God will take care of you,
through ev’ry day, o’er all the way;
He will take care of you,
God will take care of you.

Let us pray. Lord, we have resolved to live our lives as those who have the assurance of your constant and abiding care. Please increase our faith and let us not be put to shame. In Jesus name, Amen.

May You Always Come Amazed

May you be daily amazed by the grace and love with which Jesus loves you.

Tap the ‘play’ button to listen.

When I was growing up, there was, at some point, a video of one of Ron Kenoly’s concerts that my siblings and I watched over and over again. In that video, Ron Kenoly related how, as a boy, he would follow his mother to a church where the hymn, Amazing Grace, was regularly sung and that every time the congregation sang the line that says, “how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me,” he would turn to his mum, asking, “mum, what’s a wretch? Are you a wretch, mun?” And the mum would retort, saying, “Just shut up and sing.”

 May I ask you that same question. Are you a wretch that was saved? Are you a wretch that requires God’s mercies every day of your life? John Newton knew himself to be a wretch when he wrote that hymn,

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.

Dear Christian pilgrim, I know who a wretch is because I am one and that is why, like John Newton, I fully appreciate how amazing indeed is the grace that found me and saved me; the grace that finds me and saves me every day.

Who else ever called himself a wretch? The man through whom God would speak, prophet Isaiah in chapter 6: “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.”

Who else called himself a wretch? Paul in Romans 7: “What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!”

Who else? David in Psalm 34: “This poor man cried out, and the LORD heard him, And saved him out of all his troubles.”

Who else? That tax collector who stood at a distance. Who would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said: ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

What is the point of this? It is this: if, in the presence of God, you often feel like a wretch and an unworthy person, then, you are in good company. And if that feeling of wretchedness and unworthiness makes you wholly dependent on the grace of Jesus Christ, then you are in line to receive the favours of God. Yes, If you are always hoping and trusting in the grace of Jesus Christ in order to be acceptable before God, you are in the company of those who have been forgiven, who have been blessed and who have been found worthy of God’s use.

But if you are no longer daily amazed by the grace of Jesus Christ that saved you and saves you, then examine yourself whether you are still in the faith and take heed lest you fall.

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.

Let us pray.

Dear Lord, please keep us near the cross of Jesus Christ, never to forget the huge sacrifice of our Lord on the Cross of Calvary. Please keep front and centre of hearts the vision of Your holiness, never to forget how unworthy of You we are, so much so that,  every new day, every time we come before You in prayer, we come in gratitude, we come in humility, we come amazed by the grace and love with which you love us. In Jesus name, Amen.

NONE CAN EVER ASK TOO MUCH – Pilgrim’s Joy Devotional – October 11, 2022

Listen or read below (You can do both, too!)

Good morning, dear Christian pilgrim:

You’ve prayed many times before. But even the longstanding Christian often needs to be reminded of the huge opportunity presented at the hour of prayer.

Not many of us believe that we are daily presented with the Solomonic moment when God, the King invited a king, Solomon, saying, “What do you want? Ask, and I will give it to you!” The King has issued the same invitation to you as well.

Thou art coming to a King,

Large petitions with thee bring,

For His grace and power are such

None can ever ask too much. – John Newton

Are you one of those who believe that it was Solomon’s huge and generous sacrifice that moved God to invite him to ask? Then be reminded that the sacrifice greater, far greater than Solomon’s – the sacrifice of God’s own son – has been given on your behalf.

Or are you one of those who believe that it was the Lord’s faithfulness to his covenant with David, that moved Him to invite Solomon to ask? Then be reminded that He has sworn by Himself to you and all in the household of faith, saying, “They will be my people and I will be their God.”

When you call to God in prayer in the name of Jesus, you are standing, not before a king, but before the King! You can never ask too much!

You can never ask too much because He invited you ask; you can never ask too much because with God, nothing will be impossible; you can never ask too much because if the fathers and mothers of this world know how to give good gifts to their children, how much more will your Father in heaven, the King of kings, give good gifts to those who ask him; you can never ask too much because He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

Hear His invitation today, and ask Him for great things: you are before the King. If you’ve asked before, ask again. If you’ve asked again and again, keep asking. Don’t  stop and don’t cut back on your requests. The King may not be minded to make His answer manifest right now, but His greatness should remind you that He can, and His record of lovingkindness should assure you that He will!

Thou art coming to a King,

Large petitions with thee bring,

For His grace and power are such

None can ever ask too much. – John Newton

Let us pray.

May doubts, fears and the harsh realities of your present circumstances never diminish your faith in the power and grace of God to work wonders in your life. In Jesus name, Amen!

EVEN WHEN MY FAITH IS SMALL – Pilgrim’s Joy Devotional – October 10, 2022

Listen here or read below (You can do both, too!)

Good morning:

There was a woman who knew that her child had died. DEAD. Yet, she kept saying ‘All is well’ as she sought out the prophet who could mediate between her and God. Was her faith strong as she went in search of prophet Elisha? Probably not. But she went in search of that mediator all the same.

Dear Christian pilgrim, the Shunammite’s story in 2 Kings 4 should be a metaphor to you to trust in Jesus, the mediator between man and God, even when your faith is small.

Simply trusting every day,
Trusting through a stormy way;
Even when my faith is small,
Trusting Jesus, that is all

Trusting as the moments fly,
Trusting as the days go by;
Trusting Him whate’er befall,
Trusting Jesus, that is all
.

Jesus has the final say. So, even when circumstances appear hopeless, do not cease to seek out the intercessory ministry of our Lord through your fervent and unceasing prayers. In Psalm 73:26, the psalmist wrote, “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”

Are you afraid? Are you at your wits’ end? Is the situation hopeless? Thus, making your weak faith understandable? The saints who have gone before you have been there. And those of them who trusted Him notwithstanding, they found His great salvation.

Confronted by the Red Sea, pursued by Pharaoh’s ruthless army, and surrounded by a restless crowd, Moses summoned the faith to seek the face of God. The mighty deliverance wrought by God in that moment led to sing, saying, The LORD is my strength and my song, and He has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise Him, my father’s God, and I will exalt Him.

May that be your testimony, too, in Jesus name.

Simply trusting every day,
Trusting through a stormy way;
Even when my faith is small,
Trusting Jesus, that is all

Trusting as the moments fly,
Trusting as the days go by;
Trusting Him whate’er befall,
Trusting Jesus, that is all
.

Let us pray.

May the Holy spirit strengthen you to trust in Jesus even when your faith is small and may you experience the deliverance, the salvation, the blessings, the peace, and the joy of those who trust in Him. In Jesus name, Amen.
