He takes responsibility for the care and safety of others.

Welcome to Word of the Day on GospelBells Radio.

Today, the word under the spotlight is “Shepherd.”

A shepherd is one who guides, protects, feeds, and watches over a flock.
In simple terms, it is someone who takes responsibility for the care and safety of others.

Scripture repeatedly uses the image of a shepherd to describe God’s relationship with His people. Psalm 23 opens with the comforting words, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” This picture assures us of God’s guidance, provision, and protection. Jesus takes this image further in John 10:11 when He says, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.” Here, shepherding is not distant oversight, but sacrificial love.

To call God our Shepherd is to confess our dependence. Sheep are not self-sufficient creatures; they need guidance to find pasture, protection from danger, and care when wounded. In the same way, we flourish not by self-direction, but by trusting the Shepherd who knows the way, even when we do not.

This word also shapes how leaders serve God’s people. Those entrusted with care are called not to dominate, but to shepherd with humility, patience, and love, reflecting the heart of Christ.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for being my Shepherd. Lead me in Your truth, protect me from harm, and teach me to trust Your care in every season of life. Amen.

Now, let’s put this word into action. Can you make a Christian-themed sentence using shepherd?
Here’s mine: “Because the Lord is my Shepherd, I can rest even when the path ahead is uncertain.”

Now it’s your turn — share your sentence in the comments.

Thank you for listening.
