Welcome to Word of the Day on GospelBells Radio.
Today, the word under the spotlight is “Sabbath.”
Sabbath means rest — a holy rest set apart by God.
In simple terms, it is God’s gracious gift of rest for weary people, a rhythm that restores both body and soul.
From the beginning, God wove Sabbath into creation. After His work, He rested — not from exhaustion, but to establish a pattern of trust and delight. Yet Scripture takes Sabbath even deeper. Hebrews 4:9 declares, “There remains therefore a rest for the people of God.” This tells us that Sabbath is not only a day, but a promise — a rest that points beyond weekly pauses to a deeper, lasting rest found in God Himself.
Jesus invites us into this rest when He says, “Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest”(Matthew 11:28). True Sabbath is not merely stopping work; it is ceasing from self-reliance and resting in Christ’s finished work. It is learning to trust that God sustains the world — and our lives — even when we stop striving.
Sabbath reminds us that we are not defined by productivity, but by belonging. It teaches us to slow down, to worship, and to remember that our deepest rest is secured in Christ — now, and fully in the life to come.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the gift of Sabbath rest. Teach me to cease from striving, to trust in Your finished work, and to rest in You with joy and faith. Amen.
Now, let’s put this word into action. Can you make a Christian-themed sentence using Sabbath?
Here’s mine: “True Sabbath begins when my heart rests fully in Christ.”
Now it’s your turn — share your sentence in the comments.
Thank you for listening.
