Parousia (pronounced pah-ROO-see-ah) is a Greek word meaning “arrival” or “presence.” In the New Testament, it refers specifically to the second coming of Jesus Christ—His glorious return to judge the world, redeem His people fully, and renew creation.
The early Christians lived in constant anticipation of the Parousia. Paul wrote in 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 that “the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout… and we will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.” Peter reminded believers that “the day of the Lord will come like a thief” (2 Peter 3:10), urging them to live in holiness and expectation.
For us today, the Parousia is not a cause for fear but for faithfulness. It anchors our hope in a world that feels uncertain. Christ will return—not metaphorically, not symbolically, but truly. Just as He came once in humility, He will come again in power and glory. Until then, our task is clear: to live ready, to work faithfully, and to reflect His light in a darkening world.
