Word of the Day – INSINUATE

  • by

To insinuate is to suggest something indirectly—planting doubt or suspicion without saying it plainly. It often sounds harmless, but it can quietly corrode trust.

The serpent in Eden did not openly deny God’s word; he simply insinuated, “Did God really say…?” (Gen. 3:1). That whisper was enough to unsettle trust in God’s goodness. Scripture warns us of this danger: “The whisperer separates close friends” (Prov. 16:28) and “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matt. 12:34). Insinuation exposes a divided heart, one willing to hint rather than heal.

But the gospel is never insinuated. It is proclaimed. Paul declared, “We preach Christ crucified” (1 Cor. 1:23). Grace calls us to clarity: “Let your yes be yes and your no be no” (Matt. 5:37). Truth spoken in love builds up the church (Eph. 4:15, 29), while insinuation quietly tears it down.

How then should we live? Ask before speaking: Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind? If a concern arises, take it directly to the person (Matt. 18:15) rather than letting hints fester. When words wound, repent and seek repair. Leaders especially must model plain, gracious speech, for the gospel itself shines with open clarity.

Insinuation may seem small, but it is a seed that grows into division. The Spirit calls us to uproot it and replace it with speech that heals, strengthens, and proclaims Christ.

Prayer: Lord, cleanse our hearts and guard our tongues. Deliver us from whispers that harm, and let our words reflect Your truth and grace. Amen.
