Welcome to Word of the Day on GospelBells Radio. Today, the word under the spotlight is Gumption.
(Continue reading or listen as read on the radio by Dewunmi Afolabi-Ajani.)
In a world that often bends under fear or complacency, gumption stands tall. It means bold initiative, spirited courage, and the practical wisdom to act rightly, even when the path is steep. It’s the grit to step out in faith when doubt whispers retreat.
Scripture shows us gumption in action: think of David facing Goliath with a sling and unshakeable trust in God (1 Sam. 17:45-47). Or consider Esther, risking her life to plead for her people, armed with prayer and resolve (Esth. 4:16). Their gumption wasn’t mere bravado—it was faith-fueled courage, rooted in God’s sovereignty.
As Reformed believers, we know true gumption flows from grace. “Be strong and courageous,” God commands Joshua, “for the Lord your God is with you” (Josh. 1:9). This isn’t self-reliant swagger but Spirit-empowered boldness to obey, serve, and proclaim Christ in a fallen world. Whether it’s sharing the gospel with a neighbor or standing firm in truth, gumption moves us to act for God’s glory.
So today, let’s lean into the gumption God supplies. Step out in faith, love boldly, and live with the courage of those redeemed by a mighty Savior. What act of gumption is God calling you to today?
Prayer: Sovereign Lord, thank You for equipping us with the courage and wisdom to live for You. Fill us with gospel gumption to act boldly in faith, trusting Your strength in our weakness. Amen.
