Welcome to Word of the Day on GospelBells Radio. Today, the word under the spotlight is Expiation.
(Continue reading or listen as presented on the radio by Dewunmi Afolabi-Ajani)
Expiation means the act of making amends or atonement for guilt or sin. In Scripture, it points us to the heart of the gospel—the removal of sin’s guilt through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
In the Old Testament, God commanded that the high priest offer sacrifices once a year on the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16). The blood of animals symbolically covered the sins of the people, but it could never truly take them away. Those sacrifices pointed forward to the true and perfect Expiation—the offering of Christ on the cross.
Romans 3:25 tells us that “God presented Christ as a propitiation through faith in His blood.” That means Jesus bore our guilt and took away our sin completely. Through His death, He not only satisfied God’s justice (propitiation) but also removed the stain of our sin entirely (expiation). Because of Him, our record is clean; our conscience can rest.

Subscribe NowSo when guilt tries to whisper that you are still unworthy, remember the cross. Christ didn’t half-pay your debt; He expiated it fully. As Psalm 103:12 declares, “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.”
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for bearing my sin and removing my guilt completely. Help me live in the freedom and gratitude that come from knowing I am cleansed, forgiven, and made new by Your perfect expiation. Amen.
