Word of the Day | CATAPHATIC

Welcome to Word of the Day on GospelBells Radio.
Today, the word under the spotlight is Cataphatic.

(Continue reading or listen as presented on the radio by Dewunmi Afolabi-Ajani)

Cataphatic means describing God by affirming what He is — by using positive statements about His nature and character.

In simple terms, when we say “God is love,” “God is light,” or “God is faithful,” we are engaging in cataphatic theology — speaking of God based on what He has revealed about Himself in Scripture.

This way of knowing God stands in beautiful balance with the apophatic way, which focuses on what God is not. While apophatic theology reminds us that God is beyond human comprehension, cataphatic theology rejoices that He has graciously made Himself known.

In John 14:9, Jesus told Philip, “Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father.” That was cataphatic truth in its purest form — God revealing Himself in the person of Christ. Through His Word, His works, and His presence, God invites us to know Him not as an abstract mystery but as a loving, living reality.

The cataphatic path is one of praise and proclamation — declaring who God is and what He has done. It’s how David could sing, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want,” and how we can still echo those words today.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for revealing Yourself to us — not as a distant mystery, but as a faithful, loving Father. Help me to know You through Your Word and to proclaim boldly who You are. Amen.

Now, let’s put this word into action. Can you make a Christian-themed sentence using the word cataphatic?
Here’s mine: “Every time I declare that God is good, I am practicing cataphatic theology — affirming His nature as revealed in Scripture.”

Now it’s your turn! Share your sentence in the comments on our GospelBells Radio website or X page — we’ll be looking out for it!

Remember: God is not silent; He has spoken. And every word of His self-revelation draws us closer to His heart.
