Anathema is a striking word that means something or someone cursed, detested, or utterly rejected—set apart for destruction. In the Bible, it’s used to describe what stands in direct opposition to God’s holiness and truth.
In Galatians 1:8–9, Paul declares, “If anyone preaches another gospel than the one we preached to you, let him be anathema.” That’s a strong warning. It reminds us that the gospel is not open to human editing or compromise. Anything that twists the truth about Christ—His divinity, His grace, His finished work—is anathema to God.
But there’s a deeper wonder in this word: on the cross, Christ became the anathema for us. As Galatians 3:13 says, “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us.” The One who knew no sin took on our sin and its curse so that we might be blessed, accepted, and restored. In Him, the rejected become beloved, and the condemned become redeemed.
So when you hear “anathema,” don’t only think of the curse deserved by sin—think of the Savior who bore that curse so you never have to.

Lord Jesus, thank You for bearing the curse that was mine. Help me to hold fast to Your gospel, to reject every falsehood that denies it, and to live as one redeemed from what was once anathema. Amen.
Now, let’s do an exercise. Can you make a Christian-themed sentence using the word Anathema?
Here’s mine: “What was once anathema to God was nailed to the cross, and grace took its place.”
