“Woe is me, that I dwell in Meshech, that I dwell among the tents of Kedar.” — Psalm 120:5

A DARK WORLD NEEDS YOUR LIGHT

As a Christian, you must live in the middle of an ungodly world. But it does little good to cry, “Woe is me.” Jesus did not pray for you to be taken out of the world, and what He did not ask for, you need not desire. It is far better, in the Lord’s strength, to face the difficulty and glorify Him in it.

The enemy is always watching for inconsistencies in your conduct; therefore, live a holy life. Remember that many eyes are on you, and more is expected of you than of others. Strive to give no occasion for reproach. Let the only “fault” people can find in you be your faithfulness to God. Like Daniel, may it be said of you, “We shall not find any charge against this man unless we find it concerning the law of his God.”

Seek not only to be consistent but also useful. You may think, “If only I lived in a better place or worked among better people, I could serve God more effectively.” But the truth is, the darker the place, the greater the need for light. If people around you are crooked, then you are called to show what is straight; if they are stubborn and proud, they especially need the witness of truth. Where should the physician be, if not where there are many sick? And where does the soldier gain honour, if not in the thick of battle?

When you grow weary of the sin and strife all around, remember that all the saints before you endured the same. None of them were carried to heaven on soft beds of ease. They risked their lives in the fiercest parts of the conflict, and you too will not wear the crown unless you endure hardship as a faithful soldier of Jesus Christ.

So then: “Stand firm in the faith. Be brave. Be strong.”
