DRINK ABUNDANTLY
Anyone who believes in Jesus finds in Him everything needed for true satisfaction—both now and forever. The believer is not left restless or joyless, because in Christ he discovers a spring of joy and a fountain of comfort that makes him content in every circumstance.
Put him in a prison cell, and he will still find good company with his Lord. Place him in a barren wilderness, and he will be fed with the bread of heaven. Strip away his earthly friendships, and he will lean on the “friend who sticks closer than a brother.” Take away his earthly comforts, and he will rest in the shadow of the Rock of Ages. Destroy the foundations of his earthly hopes, yet his heart remains steady, trusting in the Lord.
The human heart is as restless and empty as the grave until Jesus enters it. But once He does, the heart becomes a cup filled to overflowing. In Christ there is such fullness that He becomes the believer’s all in all. The true Christian is so satisfied with the sufficiency of Jesus that he thirsts no more—except with a holy longing for deeper drinks from the living fountain.
And this kind of thirst is not painful—it is a sweet desire. It is the joyful yearning of a soul longing for a greater experience of Jesus’ love. One writer once said: “I have often dipped my bucket into the well, but now my thirst for Christ is so great that I long to press the well itself to my lips and drink endlessly.”
