When You Are Broken | ReflectionsTuesday | May 12, 2026

  • by

On this deeply stirring episode of ReflectionsTuesday, Pastor Ayo Agunloye continues the ongoing series on Brokennesswith a message titled “When You Are Broken.”

Building on the previous teaching, this episode moves from defining brokenness to examining its visible effects in the life of a believer.

The central truth of the message is both sobering and powerful:

Brokenness changes a person completely.

It changes:

  • How you respond to God
  • How you respond to people
  • How you handle suffering
  • And how much of Christ is revealed through your life

🎧 Listen to the Full Episode Below

This is not just a message to hear—it is one to surrender to prayerfully.

🏺 Brokenness Releases What Is Hidden Within

Returning to the imagery of the alabaster box, Pastor Agunloye explains that:

The treasure inside the box could not be experienced until the box was broken.

The woman who poured the ointment on Jesus did not merely “open” the container—she broke it completely, holding nothing back.

This becomes a picture of total surrender:

  • No reservation
  • No hidden compartments
  • No withheld areas of life

Brokenness is pouring your entire life at the feet of Christ.

🐎 The Broken Horse: A Picture of Surrender

One of the most vivid illustrations in this episode is that of a horse.

A wild horse:

  • Has strength
  • Has energy
  • Has ability

But it cannot be directed.

Only a broken horse becomes:

  • Responsive
  • Governable
  • Useful to its master

Likewise, brokenness in the Christian life means:

  • Being ready when God calls
  • Yielding even when it is inconvenient
  • Obeying even when it hurts

Pastor Agunloye gives a striking example:

Imagine sitting before a prepared meal and suddenly sensing God saying, “Today, you will fast.”

Brokenness means being able to put the spoon down and obey.

🔄 The Transformation of Jacob

The message carefully traces the life of Jacob before and after his encounter at Peniel.

Before brokenness:

  • Jacob manipulated people
  • Relied on his cleverness
  • Protected himself first
  • Trusted in strategy and self-preservation

But after wrestling with God and being broken:

  • His priorities changed
  • His self-preservation gave way to surrender
  • His life became transformed

A broken Jacob became Israel.

Pastor Agunloye notes that even Joseph’s upbringing reflected the transformation of a father who had encountered brokenness.

😭 True Repentance Comes From a Broken Heart

The episode also highlights the lives of:

  • David
  • Peter

Both men sinned deeply. But what distinguished them was not perfection—it was brokenness.

When confronted:

  • David wept in repentance
  • Peter went out and wept bitterly

Their sorrow was not superficial embarrassment—it was deep grief over offending God.

God looks first for a broken heart before He responds to confession.

✝️ The Ultimate Example: Jesus Christ

The message climaxes in the brokenness of Christ Himself.

Pastor Agunloye explains that:

  • Before His body was broken, Christ “abided alone”
  • But through His brokenness, His life multiplied into many

This became the foundation of the Church.

The Spirit of Christ was released through the brokenness of Christ.

Even the growth of the early Church followed this same pattern:

  • Persecution produced expansion
  • Suffering released testimony
  • Broken believers became channels of life to others

☕ Hot Water Reveals the Tea

Another memorable illustration compares brokenness to a tea bag in hot water.

The true:

  • Colour
  • Aroma
  • Taste

…of the tea only emerges under pressure.

Likewise:

Pressure reveals what is truly inside a believer.

A Christian life that only “works” in comfort has not yet been deeply broken.

🌱 What Happens When You Are Broken?

The message outlines several signs of genuine brokenness:

You become quick to repent

Sin no longer feels normal or comfortable.

You depend more on God

Confidence shifts from self to God.

You become humble and gentle

Pride gives way to meekness.

You stop living for yourself

Your greatest concern becomes pleasing God.

Your life begins to influence others

People see Christ not merely in your words—but in your reactions, attitudes, and endurance.

🛡️ Brokenness Makes You Useful

A major theme throughout the episode is this:

God can only fully use what has been broken.

Unbroken strength often resists God.
Broken strength becomes yielded strength.

Pastor Agunloye emphasizes that:

  • Trials
  • Offences
  • Delays
  • Painful experiences

…can all become instruments God uses to shape and prepare His people.

🌟 Final Reflection

“When You Are Broken” is both a challenge and an invitation.

It reminds us that:

  • Brokenness is not destruction
  • Brokenness is not weakness
  • Brokenness is surrender

And through that surrender:

  • Christ becomes visible
  • Lives are influenced
  • God’s purposes are fulfilled

The life of Christ flows most powerfully through a broken vessel.

This episode calls every believer to pray honestly:

“Lord, break me—not to destroy me, but to reveal Your life through me.”

Listen again. Reflect deeply.
And allow God to continue His transforming work within you.
