Welcome to the Did You Know? series on GospelBellsRadio.com.
This is Part 3 of our Fascinating Numbers About Genesis sub series.
Did you know that Genesis records two parallel sets of ten generations—one from Adam to Noah, and another from Shem to Abram—and that this symmetry reveals God’s orderly unfolding of history?
(Continue reading or listen as presented on the radio by Adetutu Awonuga)
The book of Genesis is not a loose collection of ancient stories. Its genealogies are intentionally structured, and nowhere is this clearer than in these two ten-generation sequences.
1️⃣ Ten Generations from Adam to Noah — Genesis 5
From the first man created by God to the man who survived the flood, Genesis lists ten generations:
Adam → Seth → Enosh → Cainan → Mahalalel → Jared → Enoch → Methuselah → Lamech → Noah
This list spans the earliest period of human history, showing the steady march toward judgment in Noah’s day.
2️⃣ Ten Generations from Shem to Abram — Genesis 11:10–26
After the flood, Genesis again presents a sequence of ten generations, beginning with Noah’s son Shem and ending with Abram (later Abraham):
Shem → Arphaxad → Salah → Eber → Peleg → Reu → Serug → Nahor → Terah → Abram
This set leads directly to the man through whom God established His covenant and the nation of Israel.
Why This Matters
These two parallel lists show that history is not random—God is guiding it with precision.
The first set leads to Noah, through whom God preserved the human race.
The second leads to Abram, through whom God would bless all nations.
Two tens.
Two turning points.
Two men through whom God restarted His redemptive plan.
In Genesis, numbers often tell a story—and here they tell us that the God of creation is also the God of order, purpose, and covenant.
