THE SWAMP OF DESPOND | Readers’ Club Class of 2026 | March 22 2026

  • by

The GospelBells Radio Readers’ Club Class of 2026 held its third session on Sunday, March 22, 2026, continuing its study of The Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan. This week’s focus was the deeply reflective chapter titled “The Slough of Despond”—a passage rich with spiritual insight and practical lessons for every believer.

The session opened with prayer led by Reverend Olaifa, followed by the customary reading of cornerstone Scriptures, reinforcing the identity of believers as “strangers and pilgrims on the earth.” The class then revisited earlier chapters, tracing Christian’s journey from conviction to resolve, before advancing into this pivotal stage of the pilgrimage.

From Enthusiasm to Struggle

Picking up from where Christian and Pliable left off, participants noted that the two pilgrims began their journey with enthusiasm and excitement. However, that optimism was quickly tested when they both fell into the Slough of Despond.

A key observation from the text—and emphasized during the discussion—was that:

They fell into the swamp because they were careless.

This simple but weighty insight became one of the central lessons of the evening. The class reflected that carelessness in the Christian journey—whether through neglect of prayer, Scripture, or vigilance—can easily lead to spiritual setbacks, even when one is on the right path.

Understanding the Slough of Despond

The class explored the meaning of the swamp itself, described vividly as muddy, filthy, and sinking. But beyond its physical description, its deeper spiritual meaning was unpacked.

Drawing from Bunyan’s allegory, participants learned that the Slough of Despond represents:

“A flood of fears, doubts, and discouraging anxieties” that arise in the soul when one becomes aware of sin and seeks salvation.

This insight resonated deeply. The class acknowledged that even sincere seekers of Christ may experience seasons of fear, uncertainty, and inner turmoil—not because they are off the path, but sometimes precisely because they are on it.

A powerful takeaway emerged:

Being on the right path does not exempt a believer from spiritual struggles.

Christian vs. Pliable: A Tale of Two Hearts

One of the most compelling aspects of the discussion was the contrast between Christian and Pliable in the swamp.

  • Pliable, having no burden on his back, quickly became discouraged and turned back toward his home.
  • Christian, weighed down by his burden (symbolizing conviction of sin), struggled but pressed forward toward the narrow gate.

The class identified a critical distinction:

Christian had conviction; Pliable had curiosity.

Pliable had joined the journey out of interest and excitement, but without a true sense of his spiritual need. When difficulty arose, he abandoned the journey entirely.

Christian, however, could not turn back—even when the path became difficult—because he was driven by a deep awareness of his need for salvation.

This led to a sobering lesson:

Those who lack true spiritual conviction will not endure trials in the Christian journey.

Direction Determines Destiny

Another striking insight was the direction each man chose in the swamp:

  • Pliable moved backward, toward his home—and escaped easily
  • Christian struggled forward, toward the narrow gate—and found it harder

This illustrated a profound truth:

Going forward with God may be harder, but it is the only path that leads to life.

The Role of Help: Divine Intervention

At the point where Christian could not rescue himself, a character named Help appeared and lifted him out of the swamp.

The class identified Help as representing the Holy Spirit, emphasizing that:

There are moments in the Christian life when only divine help can lift a believer out of despair.

Participants were reminded that while God has provided resources—His Word, His promises, and His servants—believers must still cry out to Him for help in moments of deep discouragement.

The Stepping Stones We Often Miss

A particularly rich part of the discussion focused on the “stepping stones” placed in the swamp.

These were identified as:

  • The promises of God
  • The Word of God
  • The teachings and encouragement of preachers and mature believers

Despite these provisions, many still fall into despair because they fail to see or use these resources.

This led to another important lesson:

Neglecting God’s Word and promises is a form of spiritual carelessness that leads to discouragement.

The Tragedy of Pliable

The session ended with a reflection on the fate of Pliable.

Having returned home, he became the subject of mixed reactions—praised by some, mocked by others, and ultimately silenced by shame.

The narrator’s closing remark—“And that was the end of Pliable”—was described as deeply sobering.

The class reflected:

It is a tragedy to begin the Christian journey and not finish it.

Key Lessons from the Session

The class distilled several enduring lessons from the chapter:

  • Carelessness can derail even those on the right path
  • Spiritual struggles are part of the pilgrim journey
  • Conviction sustains perseverance; curiosity does not
  • God’s Word and promises are essential for overcoming discouragement
  • Divine help is always available—but must be sought
  • The Christian journey must not only be started but completed

Looking Ahead

As the session concluded with prayer, participants were encouraged to remain vigilant, rooted in Scripture, and committed to the journey ahead.

The study of The Pilgrim’s Progress continues to unfold with increasing depth, and the next session promises further insights into the pilgrim’s path.
