C. S. Lewis once told a powerful story in The Great Divorce.
A man stood trembling on the edge of heaven. On his shoulder clung a small, red lizard. The lizard hissed softly in his ear — “You need me. I give you pleasure. I make life interesting.”
The man hated the lizard, but it had been with him so long that he couldn’t imagine life without it.
Then an angel appeared beside him and asked quietly,
“Shall I kill the lizard?”
The man was startled. “Kill it? No — it’s been behaving better lately. I think I can manage it.”
The angel’s eyes were steady. “May I kill it?”
“Not now!” the man protested. “Maybe later — I need time to think.”
“There is no later,” the angel replied. “Only now.”
The man hesitated. The lizard whispered again, “If he kills me, you’ll die too!”
Finally, with tears and trembling, the man cried out, “Go on then — do it! Kill the lizard!”
In an instant, the angel seized the lizard. There was a flash of unbearable light — a cry of pain — and silence.
Then something wonderful happened. The lizard lay dead, but in its place a shining horse stood, strong and free.
The man, too, was transformed — radiant, alive, his face aglow with new strength. He climbed onto the horse’s back, and together they rose upward, galloping toward the mountains of heaven.
