THE NARROW GATE | Pilgrim’s Progress | May 3 2026

  • by

The GospelBells Radio Readers’ Club Class of 2026 continued its weekly study of The Pilgrim’s Progress on Sunday, May 3, 2026, with a deeply reflective and spiritually stirring discussion on the chapter titled “The Narrow Gate.”

The session opened with prayer and the traditional study hymn before participants chorus-read the Readers’ Club cornerstone Scriptures, including Christ’s famous words from Matthew 7:13–14 concerning the narrow gate and the difficult way that leads to life.

Facilitator Olufemi reminded participants that the class had just completed four intense sessions studying Mr. Worldly Wiseman, his deceptive tactics, and the danger of leaving the straight path. The evening’s discussion therefore marked a major turning point in Christian’s journey: his return to the right path and his arrival at the Narrow Gate itself.

Returning From the Wrong Road

The class began by reflecting on Christian’s return journey after Evangelist corrected him.

One line from the chapter particularly stood out:

Christian felt as though he was “trespassing on forbidden ground” as he retraced his steps away from the road to Morality.

Participants described this as one of the clearest pictures yet of true repentance.

Key Lesson 1: A Teachable Spirit Is Essential

Several participants observed that Christian’s conduct revealed a profoundly teachable heart.

Unlike earlier, when he stopped to listen to Mr. Worldly Wiseman, Christian now hurried back silently, refusing even to stop and answer questions from strangers.

The class concluded:

A person who has truly learned from spiritual error becomes more watchful, cautious, and discerning.

Christian no longer treated the wrong road casually. He now understood its danger.

Key Lesson 2: Sin Places the Believer on “Forbidden Ground”

The discussion explored the emotional weight behind Bunyan’s phrase.

Participants noted that Christian’s discomfort reflected the conviction of a believer who knows:

“I should not be here.”

The class emphasized that a Christian walking outside God’s will should never feel fully comfortable there.

Instead:

  • There should be urgency to return
  • A sense of danger
  • A desire to be restored quickly

This was described as evidence of the work of the Holy Spirit in the believer’s conscience.

Knocking at the Gate

When Christian finally reached the gate, participants reflected deeply on the words written above it:

“Knock, and it shall be opened unto you.”

Yet despite the promise, Christian did not merely knock once—he knocked repeatedly and prayed desperately:

“Open to sorry me, though I have been an undeserving rebel…”

Key Lesson 3: True Repentance Is Humble and Contrite

The class identified several characteristics in Christian’s prayer:

  • Humility
  • Brokenness
  • Remorse
  • Persistence
  • Desperation for mercy

Participants observed that Christian feared the door might not open because he had previously strayed.

This led to an important insight:

The sinner who truly understands his condition approaches God with humility, not entitlement.

The discussion also connected Christian’s repeated knocking to Christ’s teaching that believers must continue praying and not faint.

Key Lesson 4: Persistent Prayer Reflects Trust in God’s Goodness

The class emphasized that repeated prayer is not evidence that God is unwilling to answer.

Rather:

Persistent prayer reflects confidence that God is good, gracious, and worth waiting for.

Participants were encouraged not to abandon prayer simply because answers do not come immediately.

Meeting “Goodwill”

One of the evening’s richest discussions centered on the character Goodwill, the solemn-looking man who opened the gate and pulled Christian safely inside.

The class identified the gate itself as representing Jesus Christ, the only way to salvation.

Goodwill, however, was understood to represent faithful Christian workers—particularly pastors, evangelists, and believers who help guide seekers safely into the fold of Christ.

Key Lesson 5: Evangelism Is Serious Work

Participants paid special attention to Bunyan’s description of Goodwill as a “solemn-looking person.”

The class concluded that this did not mean Christians must appear gloomy, but rather that:

Those involved in the work of saving souls must understand the seriousness of the task.

Goodwill knew what Christian did not yet fully understand:

  • Souls are in danger
  • Satan seeks to destroy seekers before they enter
  • Eternity is at stake

This seriousness explained why Goodwill suddenly grabbed Christian and pulled him inside the gate.

Key Lesson 6: Spiritual Warfare Intensifies Near Salvation

Goodwill explained that Beelzebub and his demons shoot arrows at people approaching the gate, attempting to destroy them before they enter.

Participants connected this vividly to Christ’s parable of the sower, where the devil attempts to steal the Word before it takes root.

The class reflected that many people who begin seeking Christ often face:

  • Sudden distractions
  • Doubts
  • Fear
  • Worldly pressures
  • Emotional confusion

The conclusion was clear:

Salvation is not merely an intellectual process—it is a spiritual battle.

Key Lesson 7: Christians Must Not Become Proud

Another powerful moment came when Goodwill expressed sorrow over Pliable’s decision to abandon the pilgrimage.

Yet Christian responded humbly:

“There is not much difference between us.”

Participants praised Christian’s humility.

Instead of boasting over those who fall away, he recognized:

“But for the grace of God, I too could have been lost.”

The class emphasized that believers should respond to others’ failures with compassion, prayer, and gratitude for God’s mercy—not pride.

The Narrow Path

As the session drew to a close, Goodwill described the road ahead:

  • It is straight
  • It is narrow
  • It was built by the patriarchs, prophets, Christ, and the apostles

Participants reflected on the enduring importance of remaining on this ancient path, even when broader and more attractive alternatives appear nearby.

Goodwill warned that many roads branch off from the narrow path, but:

The true path remains straight and narrow.

Looking Ahead

The evening ended with anticipation as Christian prepared to journey toward the House of the Interpreter, one of the most beloved sections of Bunyan’s allegory.

Participants were informed that different members of the Readers’ Club would soon be assigned various “rooms” in the Interpreter’s House for deeper reflection and presentation.
