The apostle John was given the rare privilege of seeing into heaven. When he described what first captured his attention, he said, “I looked, and behold, a Lamb.” This teaches us that the central focus of heaven is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Above all else, John’s eyes were drawn to the Redeemer—the One who purchased His people with His own blood.
The Lamb is the theme of heaven’s worship, the song of glorified saints, and the joy of holy angels. Christian, here is deep comfort for your heart: you have already seen the Lamb.Through tears of repentance and faith, your eyes have looked upon Him who bore away your sins. Rejoice! For in a little while, when every tear is wiped away, you will see that same Lamb exalted, reigning in glory.
Even now, your joy is found in daily fellowship with Jesus. In heaven, that joy will be perfected. You will no longer know His presence by faith alone, but by sight. You will live with Him forever, never again separated, never again distracted.
“I looked, and behold, a Lamb!” Indeed, that Lamb is heaven itself. As Samuel Rutherford beautifully expressed it, “Heaven and Christ are the same thing.” To be with Christ is heaven, and heaven is nothing less than being with Christ. He once wrote with holy passion, “If I could be in heaven without Christ, it would be hell to me; and if I could be in hell and still have Christ, it would be heaven—for Christ is all the heaven I desire.”
Is this not the language of your heart, believer?
“Not all the harps above
Can make a heavenly place,
If God His presence should remove,
Or hide His gracious face.”
All you need to be fully and eternally blessed is this one thing: to be with Christ.
