The Israelites in the wilderness were constantly facing change. Whenever the pillar of cloud stopped, they pitched their tents. But by the next morning, the trumpet would sound, the ark would move forward, and the fiery, cloudy pillar would lead them through mountain passes, up hillsides, or across the dry desert. They barely had time to rest before hearing the call: “Away! This is not your rest; you must keep moving toward Canaan!”They never stayed long in one place. Even wells and palm trees could not hold them.
Yet they had a permanent home in their God. His pillar of cloud was their roof, and His fire by night was their household flame. Though they had to move from place to place, never able to say, “Here we are secure; here we will dwell,” Moses declared: “Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.”
The Christian’s relationship with God is unchanging. He may be rich today and poor tomorrow; healthy today and sick tomorrow; joyful today and distressed tomorrow—but his standing with God never shifts. If God loved me yesterday, He loves me today. My unshakable home of rest is the Lord Himself.
Let my prospects fail, let my hopes collapse, let joy wither, let everything be ruined—I have lost nothing of what I possess in God. He is “my strong habitation to which I may continually resort.” I may be a pilgrim in this world, but I am at home in my God. On earth I wander, but in Him I dwell in a quiet, secure habitation.
