“Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler.” – Psalm 91:3

  • by

God delivers His people from the snare of the fowler in two ways: from the trap, and out of the trap. First, He delivers us from the snare—He does not allow us to fall into it. Second, if we are caught, He delivers us out of it. For some believers, the first promise is most precious; for others, the second is their greatest comfort.

“He shall deliver you from the snare.” How does He do this? Often, trouble itself is the means God uses. He knows that unchecked backsliding would end in destruction, and so, in mercy, He sends correction. We ask, “Lord, why is this happening?” not realizing that this very trial has rescued us from a far greater danger. Many have been saved from ruin by their sorrows and setbacks—these have frightened the birds away from the net.

At other times, God keeps His people from the fowler’s snare by granting them spiritual strength, so that when temptation comes, they are able to say, “How can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”

But oh, how blessed it is to know that even if a believer, in a moment of weakness, falls into the net, God will still bring him out! O backslider, be humbled—but do not despair. Though you have wandered, hear what your Redeemer says: “Return, O backsliding children, and I will have mercy on you.” You may reply, “I cannot return; I am trapped.”Then listen again to the promise: “Surely He shall deliver you out of the snare of the fowler.”

You will yet be brought out of every evil into which you have fallen. Though repentance will remain your lifelong posture, the One who has loved you will not cast you away. He will receive you again and restore joy and gladness, so that even the broken bones may rejoice. No bird of paradise will perish in the fowler’s net.
