Why was Christ chosen from among the people? Speak, my heart—for the heart understands best. Was it not so that He might truly be our Brother, bound to us by the blessed tie of shared humanity? What a relationship exists between Christ and the believer! The believer can say, “I have a Brother in heaven. I may be poor, but my Brother is rich. He is a King—and will He allow me to lack anything while He sits upon the throne? Never! He loves me; He is my Brother.”
Believer, treasure this thought. Wear it like a necklace of diamonds around the neck of your memory. Place it like a golden ring on the finger of remembrance. Use it as the King’s own seal, stamping your prayers with confidence and holy boldness. He is a Brother born for adversity—so treat Him as such.
Christ was also chosen from among the people so that He might fully understand our needs and sympathize with us. “He was tempted in all points as we are, yet without sin.” In every sorrow, we have His compassion. Temptation, pain, disappointment, weakness, weariness, poverty—He knows them all, because He has felt them all. Remember this, Christian, and let it comfort you. No matter how hard or painful your path may be, it is already marked by the footprints of your Savior. Even when you enter the dark valley of the shadow of death, or stand at the deep waters of the Jordan, you will find that He has been there before you.
Wherever we go, He has gone ahead of us. Every burden we carry was once laid upon the shoulders of Immanuel.
“His way was far rougher and darker than mine;
Did Christ, my Lord, suffer—and shall I complain?”
Take courage. Royal feet have walked this road before you. They have left a blood-red trail, forever consecrating even the most thorn-filled path.
