HOUSE OF THE INTERPRETER (3) – 3rd & 4th Rooms | Pilgrim’s Progress Readers’ Club | May 24 2026

  • by

The GospelBells Radio Readers’ Club Class of 2026 continued its study of The Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan on Sunday, May 24, 2026, with a rich and deeply encouraging session exploring two memorable rooms in The House of the Interpreter: “Passion and Patience” and “Fire, Water, and Oil.”

The session opened with prayer and the traditional recitation of the Readers’ Club cornerstone Scriptures from Matthew 7:13–14, 1 Peter 2:11, and Hebrews 11:13, reminding participants that believers are strangers and pilgrims journeying toward an eternal city.

Facilitator Olufemi Oguntokun reminded the class that Christian remained in the House of the Interpreter, where, according to Bunyan, he would continue to be shown “rare and profitable things.”

The evening’s discussions proved especially powerful because they addressed two realities every believer wrestles with:

  • The struggle between present gratification and eternal reward
  • And the mystery of how Christians continue standing despite relentless spiritual opposition

“Passion and Patience”: Two Ways of Living

The first discussion centered on the third room in the Interpreter’s House.

Christian saw two children seated apart from each other:

  • One named Passion
  • The other named Patience

Passion was restless and upset because he wanted his inheritance immediately.

Patience, however, was willing to wait.

Soon, someone arrived and handed Passion a bag of treasure, which he spent recklessly until nothing remained except rags. Patience, meanwhile, quietly waited for better and lasting riches.

The Interpreter explained that Passion represents people who live entirely for this world, while Patience represents those willing to wait for the eternal glory promised by God.

Key Lesson 1: Christians Must Learn to Wait for the “Best Things”

One of the evening’s strongest themes was the importance of spiritual patience.

Participants identified three reasons the Interpreter gave for why patience is wise for Christians:

  1. Patience waits for the best things
  2. Patience will receive lasting glory
  3. The glory to come will never fade

The class reflected deeply on the temporary nature of earthly pleasures.

Participants observed that:

  • Wealth fades
  • Pleasures lose their excitement
  • Worldly success decays
  • Human applause disappears

But the joy God promises His people will never “cloy” or lose its sweetness.

Several participants connected this to the hymn:

“Pleasures that can never cloy.”

The class emphasized that Christians are not forbidden from enjoying blessings in this world, but they must never allow earthly gain to cost them eternal reward.

Olufemi repeatedly stressed:

The Christian’s ultimate reward is in heaven.

Earthly blessings were described as merely “foretastes” or “trickles” of the greater glory to come.

Key Lesson 2: Waiting on God Is Often a Struggle

A major discussion followed concerning why patience is so difficult.

The Interpreter’s explanation became central to the evening:

Present things and physical desires are “close companions,” while eternal things feel distant to the flesh.

Participants reflected on modern pressures that make waiting difficult:

  • Comparing oneself with peers
  • Pressure to “achieve” by certain ages
  • Desire for quick wealth or success
  • Temptation to compromise because “others are doing it”

Several contributors observed that society constantly pressures people toward immediate gratification.

One participant noted that many people reason:

“If others are doing it and prospering, why shouldn’t I?”

The class repeatedly returned to the biblical reality that believers still carry fallen flesh and therefore require continual help from the Holy Spirit.

The conclusion was sobering:

Patience is not natural to fallen humanity—it is cultivated by grace.

Key Lesson 3: The Christian Must Resist “Present Things” When They Conflict With Eternal Glory

Participants reflected on the temptation to pursue sinful shortcuts for worldly advancement.

The example of Joseph resisting temptation in Potiphar’s house was discussed as a model of choosing eternal faithfulness over temporary pleasure.

The class emphasized:

Not everything immediately available to the believer should be pursued.

Sometimes Christians must deliberately refuse opportunities that would compromise their spiritual integrity.

This was connected directly to Christ’s teaching about laying up treasures in heaven rather than on earth.

“Fire, Water, and Oil”: The Mystery of Christian Perseverance

The class then moved into the fourth room of the Interpreter’s House.

Christian saw a fire burning against a wall while a man stood nearby constantly pouring water on it to extinguish it. Surprisingly, however, the fire only burned brighter.

The Interpreter explained:

  • The fire represents the work of God’s grace in the believer’s heart
  • The man pouring water represents the devil
  • The hidden man secretly pouring oil represents Christ sustaining the believer by His mercy

This room generated one of the evening’s most emotional discussions.

Key Lesson 4: Satan Relentlessly Opposes the Christian Life

Participants reflected on Bunyan’s vivid picture of Satan standing directly beside the fire, constantly pouring water upon it.

The class emphasized that spiritual opposition is not occasional—it is relentless.

Believers face continual attacks through:

  • Temptation
  • Discouragement
  • Fear
  • Pride
  • Fleshly desires
  • Worldly distractions

Several contributors observed that the Christian life itself is a mystery:

How does the fire continue burning despite everything against it?

Key Lesson 5: Christians Persevere Only by Grace

The answer, participants concluded, lies in the hidden man behind the wall secretly pouring oil upon the fire.

The class identified this hidden helper as Christ Himself continually sustaining believers through grace.

This led to one of the most important conclusions of the evening:

No Christian perseveres by personal strength alone.

Participants repeatedly emphasized:

  • Salvation is by grace
  • Perseverance is by grace
  • Spiritual endurance is by grace

The class reflected on several Scriptures affirming God’s sustaining presence, including:

  • Isaiah 43:2 — “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you”
  • Psalm 34:19 — “Many are the afflictions of the righteous…”
  • Joshua 1:9 — “Be strong and courageous…”
  • 1 Corinthians 10:13 — God providing a way of escape in temptation

A particularly moving moment came when the class reflected on Isaiah 49:14–16, where God answers those who feel abandoned:

“I have engraved you on the palms of My hands.”

Key Lesson 6: God Often Sustains Believers in Hidden Ways

One of the deepest insights from the evening centered on the fact that the man pouring oil was hidden from view.

Participants reflected that believers often see:

  • The attacks
  • The struggles
  • The temptations
  • The pressures

But cannot always immediately see how God is helping them.

Yet Bunyan’s allegory assures Christians that:

Even when God’s help is invisible, it is real.

The class repeatedly encouraged believers not to conclude that God has abandoned them simply because His help is not immediately obvious.

Key Lesson 7: Courage Is a Command

Toward the close of the meeting, participants reflected on God’s command to Joshua:

“Be strong and courageous.”

Olufemi emphasized that courage is not merely advice but a divine command grounded in God’s presence.

Believers therefore must not surrender to despair simply because spiritual warfare is intense.

The hidden oil is still flowing.

The fire will continue burning.

And Christ continues interceding for His people.

Looking Ahead

As the class concluded, participants expressed gratitude for the encouragement and spiritual clarity the evening’s discussion brought.

The Interpreter’s House continues proving to be one of the richest sections of Bunyan’s allegory, offering profound insights into:

  • Spiritual warfare
  • Patience
  • Temptation
  • Perseverance
  • Grace
  • And the sustaining power of Christ
