On a Godly Wife’s Faithful Support Through Hardship
Good morning to you once again. It is Wednesday, the 29th of April 2026. The programme is On the Lord’s Side — Christian perspectives on news and current events. My name is Olufemi Oguntokun. You can follow me on X, and you can follow Gospel Bells Radio on X at Gospel Bells Radio.
I want to begin this morning on a positive note. We are all, on the Lord’s side, quite proud, and this should be a teachable moment for everyone. It should also be a loud message to a culture that has constantly tried to reframe the institution of marriage.
A video that has been trending since yesterday is from the celebration of the 40th birthday of actress Chioma Oshigbeson. She is an actress and the wife of a pastor. If you have followed many Nigerian sitcoms in recent times, you will know the leading role she played in one very popular series.
This is not about what she said at her birthday party or what she wore, but something her husband said about her. I find this deeply instructive. I have come across women who have played important roles in the lives of their husbands, and I have been blessed with such a wife as well. This testimony should be sent as a message to a contemporary culture that seeks to redefine marriage.
On the Pastor’s Emotional Testimony of His Wife’s Sacrifice
This is an extract from a speech made by her husband, a pastor, during her birthday celebration:
“You know, if I need anything, I am very comfortable to ask her because I know that she — I don’t want to go emotional — but even when I didn’t have anything, she was consistent, never complained. She carried a lot of burden, real bills, for at least seven years. Never complained.
She always tells me, ‘Baby, I believe in you. You can do it. You are a great man. You are a millionaire.’ And now she says, ‘You are a billionaire.’ She keeps telling me that, and that keeps me going.
There was a time in our family when she used black nylon as diapers for the children. That went on for weeks. They would eat pap for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And she never complained.
I don’t know where they made her from, but she is just an amazing woman.”
This is a powerful testimony. This lady should be proud of herself. And indeed, all Christian women who have stood as pillars of support to their husbands should be proud.
On Marriage as Covenant, Not Transaction
I bring this up because contemporary culture has increasingly reduced marriage to a transaction. Many now approach marriage by calculating financial benefits and setting conditions.
Some say, “Before I give my daughter in marriage, I must be sure the man is financially stable.” While that concern is not entirely wrong, it reflects a deeper shift — marriage is now seen as an exchange rather than a covenant.
But the biblical vision of marriage is companionship through all seasons — for better or for worse. Yet today, even the phrase “for worse” is sometimes omitted in wedding vows.
This testimony reminds us that marriage glorifies God when couples remain committed even in hardship.
The episode described — using black nylon as diapers and surviving on pap — reflects the deeper meaning of Genesis: “they were naked and not ashamed.” This is not merely physical but speaks of vulnerability — emotional, financial, and personal — shared without shame.
Marriage is the place where one can be fully known and still accepted.
On Proverbs 31 and Godly Character in Marriage
Some reactions online argue that women hesitate to support struggling men because such sacrifices are not always reciprocated. While that concern exists, it does not negate biblical responsibility.
Marriage is not about “men in general” but about one’s own spouse.
Scripture reminds us in Proverbs 31:
“The heart of her husband safely trusts her… She does him good and not evil all the days of her life.”
This testimony reflects that reality.
Young people must not be misled into thinking marriage is only about comfort or financial security. While stability matters, divine guidance matters more. When God leads, He sustains.
Let us pray that such marriages continue to grow and flourish. Amen.
On Yemi Osinbajo’s Decision to Quit Alcohol
You may recall that about a week ago we discussed another statement by Professor Yemi Osinbajo. In this recent clip, he shared how he stopped drinking alcohol after becoming a Christian.
He recounted how he initially justified drinking, citing Jesus turning water into wine. Even after becoming born again, he intended to continue drinking.
But one day, after preaching, he went to buy beer. At a restaurant, his colleagues hid their drinks, saying, “You are the priest.”
That moment convicted him.
He realized that although something may be lawful, it may not be expedient or edifying. From that day, he stopped drinking.
On Christian Liberty and the Higher Standard of the Kingdom
This story highlights an important truth: Christian liberty is not license.
Yes, many things are lawful, but not all things are beneficial. The kingdom operates on a higher standard.
We are called to consider what edifies, what builds others, and what preserves the testimony of Christ.
It is not just about what is allowed, but what is profitable for the kingdom.
We must be sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit and willing to surrender even permissible things for a higher calling.
On the Tragic Extrajudicial Killing in Delta State
Next is a deeply troubling story from Delta State, Nigeria. A video surfaced showing police officers executing a suspect whose hands were tied behind his back.
The young man pleaded, saying he would confess everything, but he was shot.
The act appeared deliberate, and there are indications that efforts were made to conceal evidence.
This is deeply disturbing.
Even if a person is accused of a crime, the law guarantees the right to a fair hearing. Extrajudicial killings violate both legal and moral principles.
From a Christian perspective, every life is accountable to God. Those who take life unlawfully will answer for it.
Authorities must ensure that justice is served. Those responsible must be held accountable.
Silence or inaction would only deepen the injustice.
Closing
Thank you for joining us this morning on On the Lord’s Side. I hope to be with you again tomorrow by the grace of God.
Whatever you do today, please remain firmly on the Lord’s side.
God bless you.
