The GospelBells Radio Readers’ Club Class of 2026 held its second session on Sunday, March 15, 2026, continuing its study of The Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan. Building on the powerful opening chapter, participants turned their attention to Chapter 2: “Obstinate and Pliable,” uncovering rich spiritual lessons on conviction, resistance, and the cost of following Christ.
The session followed the now familiar Readers’ Club format—opening prayer, hymn, cornerstone Scriptures, recap of the previous chapter, and a deep dive into the text—creating a reflective and participatory atmosphere for the approximately two dozen attendees, with many more listening online.

Revisiting the Foundation
The class began with a recap of Chapter 1, reinforcing key themes: the man in rags, the burden of sin, and the urgency of salvation. Participants were reminded that Bunyan’s work is an allegory rooted deeply in Scripture, and that every image carries spiritual meaning.
A particularly important lesson revisited was patience in the spiritual journey—“days turned into weeks” before help came. This underscored that true seekers must wait on God’s timing, combining faith with perseverance.
The Narrow Gate and the Shining Light
Before moving fully into Chapter 2, the class explored a crucial insight from Chapter 1:
- The narrow gate represents Jesus Christ
- The shining light represents the Word of God
Participants reflected on the relationship between the two:
the Word leads seekers to Christ.
A key takeaway emerged for both personal devotion and evangelism:
Anyone who truly searches the Scriptures with an open heart will be led to Christ.
Chapter Two: The World Responds
Chapter 2 introduced two contrasting characters—Obstinate and Pliable—as neighbours who pursue the fleeing pilgrim (now named Christian).
The class identified a striking progression in opposition to Christian’s decision:
- Family: Pleading and emotional appeal
- Neighbours: Watching, mocking, threatening
- Pursuers: Determined to physically stop him
This progression led to an important lesson:
Spiritual decisions will attract increasing levels of resistance.
Participants noted that opposition may begin subtly but can escalate—even becoming forceful—if one remains resolute.
Key Lesson: Expect Resistance—and Be Resolute
A central theme of the discussion was the necessity of unwavering conviction.
Christian’s response—“That’s absolutely impossible”—stood out as a model of spiritual firmness. Even before arguments began, he had settled his mind.
The class emphasized that believers must be prepared to:
- Be mocked as foolish
- Face emotional pressure from loved ones
- Endure threats or even active opposition
Yet, like Christian, they must remain steadfast.
The Cost of the Pilgrim Life
One of the most sobering lessons came from Christian’s refusal to return to his “comfortable life.”
Participants reflected on his powerful statement:
Everything you give up pales in comparison to what lies ahead.
This led to a key conclusion:
No one can truly follow Christ without being willing to “forsake all.”
The class highlighted that sometimes the cost includes:
- Relationships
- Social acceptance
- Comfort and familiarity
And like Christian, believers may need to “cover their ears” to avoid being drawn back by voices—even loving ones—that hinder their spiritual progress.
Obstinate and Pliable: Two Responses to Truth
The contrast between the two characters yielded powerful insights:
Obstinate
- Represents the world—unyielding and resistant to truth
- Unmoved by reason or Scripture
- Ultimately turns back
Pliable
- Represents those who are open and easily persuaded
- Initially attracted to truth
- But raises questions about depth and endurance
Participants observed that while obstinate rejection is obvious, shallow acceptance can be equally dangerous—a theme to be explored further in subsequent chapters.
The Danger of Distractions
Another major takeaway was the role of distractions in the Christian journey.
As noted during the discussion:
- Distractions often begin with close relationships
- Then expand to society and wider influences
- In today’s context, even media and culture can become sources of distraction
The class emphasized the need for focus, discernment, and spiritual discipline.
The Role of Spiritual Warfare
Several contributions highlighted a deeper dimension:
the opposition Christian faced was not merely human, but spiritual.
Participants concluded that:
The enemy actively resists anyone seeking to leave the “City of Destruction.”
This understanding reinforces the need for:
- Prayer
- Grace
- Dependence on God
Closing Reflections
As the session ended, participants reflected on the need to:
- Remain firm in spiritual convictions
- Expect resistance at different levels
- Value eternal life above temporary comfort
- Guard against both obstinate rejection and shallow commitment
The class also noted that the story of Pliable is far from over, and his journey will provide further lessons in the next session.
Looking Ahead
The Readers’ Club will continue its study in the next session, exploring what becomes of Christian and Pliable as they proceed on the pilgrim path.
Participants were encouraged to remain committed, prayerful, and attentive—not only to the text, but to its application in their own lives.
