“These have no root.” – Luke 8:13

  • by

My soul, examine yourself this morning in the light of this Scripture. You have received the word with joy. Your emotions were stirred, and the message made a strong impression on you. But remember this: receiving the word with the ear is one thing; receiving Jesus into the very depths of your soul is quite another. Shallow emotion often coexists with an unbroken heart, and an enthusiastic response to the word is not always a lasting one.

In the parable, the seed fell on ground with a rocky foundation, covered only by a thin layer of soil. When the seed began to grow, its roots were blocked by the stone beneath, so it used all its strength to shoot upward as quickly as possible. But because it had no deep roots to draw moisture and nourishment, it soon withered away. Is this my condition? Have I been putting on an outward appearance of faith without a corresponding inner life? True growth always happens both upward and downward at the same time.

Am I truly rooted in sincere faithfulness and love for Jesus? If my heart remains hard, untouched, and unfertilized by grace, the good seed may sprout for a while, but it will eventually die. It cannot thrive in a heart that is rocky, unbroken, and unsanctified. Let me fear a kind of godliness that grows quickly but lacks endurance, like Jonah’s gourd. Let me count the cost of following Jesus. Above all, let me experience the power of His Holy Spirit—then the seed within me will remain and endure.

If my heart stays as stubborn as it was by nature, the heat of trials will scorch me, and my hardness will intensify the burning upon the poorly rooted seed. My religion will soon fade, and my despair will be severe. Therefore, O heavenly Sower, plow my heart first. Then plant Your truth deep within me, and let my life produce a rich and abundant harvest for You.
