“I will be their God.” 

Christian, here is everything you could ever need. To be truly happy, you need something that fully satisfies the soul—and is this not enough? If you could pour this promise into your cup, would you not say with David, “My cup runs over; I have more than my heart could ever desire”?

When this promise is fulfilled—“I am your God”—do you not possess everything? Human desire is as insatiable as death, but He who fills all things is able to satisfy it completely. Who can measure the depth of our longings? Yet the immeasurable riches of God are more than sufficient to overflow them. Tell me, are you not complete when God Himself is yours? What could you lack if you have Him? Is His all-sufficiency not enough, even if everything else were taken away?

But you want more than quiet contentment—you long for deep joy and overflowing delight. Come then, O soul: here is music worthy of heaven itself, for your portion is God, the Maker of heaven. No melody from instruments, no harmony from human voices, can compare with the sweetness of this promise: “I will be their God.” Here is a deep sea of joy, an endless ocean of delight. Enter it. Swim for a lifetime and you will find no shore; dive through eternity and you will never reach the bottom.

“I will be their God.” If this promise does not make your eyes shine and your heart leap with joy, then surely your soul is not in a healthy state. Yet you desire more than present joy—you long for a hope that reaches into the future. And what greater hope could there be than the full realization of this promise: “I will be their God”? This is the crown jewel of all God’s promises. Its enjoyment brings heaven into the present, and its fulfillment will be heaven in eternity.

Live in the light of your Lord. Let your soul be continually overwhelmed by His love. Draw out the richness and nourishment this promise offers. Live fully in your privileges, and rejoice with joy that words cannot fully express.
