And can you not do this? Have you truly known no mercies from the Lord? Even if your spirit feels heavy now, can you forget that blessed moment when Jesus met you and said, “Come to Me”? Can you forget the joyful hour when He broke your chains, shattered your bondage, and declared, “I have come to set you free”?

And if the early love of your devotion seems distant, surely there is still some precious marker along your life’s journey—some milestone not yet worn smooth—where you can read a clear reminder of His mercy toward you. Have you never been sick before and found that He restored you? Have you never lacked provision and seen Him supply your needs? Have you never been in deep trouble and watched Him deliver you?

Rise up now and go back to the river of your own experience. Gather a few reeds of remembrance and weave them into a small ark, so that your childlike faith may float safely again. Do not forget what your God has done for you. Open the book of remembrance and reflect on the days gone by.

Can you not recall Mount Mizar? Did the Lord never meet you at Hermon? Have you never walked upon the Delectable Mountains? Have you never been helped in a moment of urgent need? Yes—you have.

Go back, then, to the chosen mercies of yesterday. Even if today feels dark, light the lamps of the past. Their glow will shine through the present shadows, and you will learn again to trust the Lord until the day breaks and the shadows flee away.

“Remember, O LORD, Your tender mercies and Your lovingkindnesses, for they are from of old.”
