Hagar once found deliverance at that well, and Ishmael drank from the water graciously revealed by the God who lives and sees the sons of men. But her visit was only temporary—like many who turn to the Lord in times of trouble and then forget Him when life becomes easier. They cry out in need but drift away in comfort.
Isaac, however, lived there. He made the well of the living and all-seeing God his constant source of supply. The steady pattern of a person’s life—the place where the soul chooses to dwell—is the real test of spiritual condition.
Perhaps the story of God’s mercy to Hagar made that place sacred to Isaac. Its meaningful name may have drawn his heart. His quiet meditations there at evening likely deepened his attachment. Meeting Rebekah at that well surely made it precious to him. But above all, it was there that he enjoyed fellowship with the living God—and that is what made him choose it as his dwelling place.
Let us also learn to live consciously in the presence of the living God. May the Holy Spirit help us to feel each day, “You, God, see me.” May the Lord Jehovah be to us like that well—refreshing, comforting, unfailing, springing up into everlasting life.
The bottle drawn from human sources soon cracks and runs dry, but the well of the Creator never fails. Blessed is the one who lives beside that well, where constant and abundant supply is always near. The Lord has proven Himself a faithful Helper to others; His name is Shaddai—God All-Sufficient. Our hearts have known sweet fellowship with Him. Through Him our souls have found their glorious Bridegroom, the Lord Jesus. In Him we live and move and have our being.
Let us then remain in close communion with Him. Glorious Lord, keep us from wandering. Anchor us by the well of the living God.
