“Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord.” —2 Corinthians 6:17

  • by

Christian, while living in the world, must not belong to the world. His life should be clearly distinct, marked by one great purpose: “For to me, to live is Christ.” Whether eating, drinking, working, or resting, everything must be done for God’s glory.

You may store up treasure—but store it in heaven, where it cannot decay or be stolen. You may strive for wealth—but let your ambition be to be “rich in faith” and in good works. You may enjoy pleasures—but let your joy be expressed in psalms and songs that rise from a heart filled with gratitude to the Lord.

This separation is not only outward but inward—in spirit and in aim. Wait humbly before God, be aware of His presence, delight in communion with Him, and seek His will above all. In this way, you will show that you are a citizen of heaven.

Separation also shows in actions. If something is right, do it—even if it costs you. If something is wrong, refuse it—even if it promises gain. Have no partnership with the “unfruitful works of darkness,” but expose them for what they are. Walk in a way that is worthy of your high calling.

Never forget, Christian: you are a child of the King of kings. Keep yourself unstained by the world. Do not let the hands that will one day play heavenly harps be soiled by sin. Do not let the eyes destined to behold the King’s beauty be clouded with lust. Do not let the feet that will walk golden streets be stained by wandering into sinful places. Do not let the heart that will soon overflow with heaven’s joy be choked with pride or bitterness.

Rise, my soul, and soar above
The careless crowd below;
Leave behind their fleeting joys,
Their pride, their empty show.
Go where eternal beauties bloom,
Where pleasures never fade,
Where wealth that cannot waste away
And endless glories wait.
