IN A DESPERATE SITUATION?
In despair, the heartbroken father turned from the powerless disciples to the Master Himself. His son was in the worst possible condition, and every effort had failed. But the suffering child was quickly freed from the evil spirit when the father, in faith, obeyed Jesus’ command: “Bring him to Me.”
Children are a precious gift from God, yet they bring with them deep concerns. They may become a source of great joy or of great sorrow; they may be filled with God’s Spirit or overtaken by the spirit of evil. In every situation, God has given us one remedy for their struggles: “Bring him to Me.”
Oh, that we would pray more earnestly for our children while they are still infants! Sin is already at work, so our prayers must begin early. Even before their first cries announce their arrival into a sinful world, our cries to God on their behalf should be rising. As they grow, we will see signs of that “dumb and deaf spirit” that neither prays rightly nor hears God’s voice—but still Jesus says, “Bring them to Me.”
As they enter adulthood, some may fall headlong into sin, even showing hostility toward God. When our hearts are breaking, let us not forget the Great Physician’s words: “Bring them to Me.” We must never stop praying for them until their very last breath, for no soul is beyond hope while Jesus lives.
Sometimes God allows His people to be pressed into corners so that they may learn firsthand how utterly dependent they are on Him. Wayward children often reveal to us our complete inability to change hearts—driving us to the Strong One for strength. And that, in itself, is a blessing.
