A Christian ought to bear a clear and unmistakable resemblance to Jesus Christ. Many biographies of Christ have been written—beautifully and powerfully—but the finest biography of all is the one written every day in the words and actions of His people. If we truly lived as we claim, and as we are called to live, we would be living portraits of Christ. Our likeness would be so evident that the world would not need long examination to decide. They would look once and say, “This person has been with Jesus. He has learned from Him. He is like Him.”
A Christian should resemble Christ in boldness. Never be ashamed to confess your faith. Your profession will never disgrace you—only take care that you do not disgrace it. Be courageous for your God, as Jesus was. Imitate Him in love: think kindly, speak kindly, act kindly, so that others may say, “This person has been with Jesus.”
Imitate Christ in holiness. Was He zealous for His Father’s work? Then be zealous also. Go about doing good. Do not waste time—it is too precious. Was He self-denying, never living for His own advantage? Be the same. Was He devoted in prayer? Then be earnest in prayer. Did He submit fully to His Father’s will? Then surrender yourself likewise. Was He patient? Learn to endure.
And above all, seek to forgive as He forgave. Let those unforgettable words of your Lord echo in your heart: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” Forgive, as you hope to be forgiven. Overcome evil with kindness. Remember—returning good for evil is godlike. Live in such a way, then, by every means and in every place, that all who see you may say with certainty, “This one has been with Jesus.”
