The GospelBells Radio Readers’ Club Class of 2026 continued its journey through John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progresson Sunday, June 14, 2026, with what many regard as one of the most moving and important scenes in the entire book: Christian’s arrival at the Cross.
For several weeks, participants have followed Christian from the City of Destruction, through the Slough of Despond, past the counsel of Mr. Worldly Wiseman, through the Wicket Gate, and into the House of the Interpreter. Yet throughout that journey, one problem remained unresolved.
Christian was still carrying his burden.
That burden—the guilt and weight of his sin—had driven him from home, filled him with anxiety, and made every step of the pilgrimage difficult. Though he had entered through the narrow gate and had spent weeks learning “rare and profitable things” in the House of the Interpreter, the burden remained on his back.
The June 14 session focused on the moment when that burden finally disappeared.
A Reminder of the Pilgrim’s Unfinished Business
As the class opened, participants reflected on how far Christian had already travelled.
He had:
- Entered through the narrow gate.
- Met Goodwill.
- Received instruction from the Interpreter.
- Learned lessons about grace, perseverance, vigilance, and eternity.
Yet one participant quickly identified the unresolved issue that had followed Christian since the opening chapter:
The burden was still there.
Facilitator Olufemi observed that Christian had begun the pilgrimage because of that burden. It was the burden that caused him to cry, “What shall I do?” It was the burden that made him restless, fearful, and desperate for salvation.
Now the story had reached the point where Bunyan would finally address it.
Walking Between the Walls of Salvation
The chapter opens with Christian travelling along a path bordered on both sides by a wall called Salvation.
The class spent considerable time discussing the significance of this image.
Participants suggested that the walls represented both guidance and protection. They marked out the correct path and kept the pilgrim from wandering away.
The discussion soon broadened into a reflection on the security of those who are in Christ.
Drawing from Isaiah 26:1 and the words of Jesus concerning His sheep, participants reflected on the assurance that believers who remain in Christ are held securely in His care. The walls of salvation remind pilgrims that they are not travelling alone and are not left to protect themselves.
Why Was Christian Still Burdened?
One of the evening’s most fascinating discussions centred on a question that has puzzled many readers of Bunyan.
Why did Christian’s burden not fall off at the Wicket Gate?
Why did it remain through his entire stay in the House of the Interpreter?
Why wait until the Cross?
Participants noted that Christian had already come to Christ through the narrow gate and had already received instruction from the Holy Spirit. Yet Bunyan deliberately portrays him as continuing to struggle beneath the weight of guilt.
The class concluded that Bunyan was making a profound spiritual point:
It is one thing to know about Christ. It is another thing to understand fully what Christ accomplished at Calvary.
Many Christians, participants observed, continue carrying guilt, fear, shame, and uncertainty because they have not yet grasped the completeness of Christ’s sacrifice.
They know that Christ died.
But they have not yet entered fully into the freedom secured by His death.
The Moment Everything Changed
The turning point came when Christian reached the hill upon which stood the Cross.
Below it was a tomb.
As he looked toward the Cross, something extraordinary happened:
His burden suddenly slipped from his shoulders, rolled down the hill, and disappeared into the tomb.
The class noted an important detail.
Christian did not cut the burden off.
He did not struggle to remove it.
He did not perform any act to free himself.
The burden simply fell away.
Participants repeatedly returned to this observation.
The burden was removed not by Christian’s effort but by the finished work of Christ.
Several contributors emphasized that this is the very heart of the gospel.
Forgiveness is not earned.
Salvation is not achieved through self-improvement.
Freedom comes through faith in what Christ has already accomplished.
What Happened at the Cross?
A significant portion of the evening was devoted to answering a simple but vital question:
What exactly happened at Calvary?
Drawing from Hebrews, 1 Peter, Zechariah, and other Scriptures, participants reflected on the completeness of Christ’s sacrifice.
The class highlighted several truths:
- Christ suffered once for sins.
- His sacrifice was sufficient.
- The debt of sin was fully paid.
- Believers may now approach God with confidence.
- The blood of Christ remains effective for all who trust Him.
Repeatedly, participants emphasized that many Christians continue walking as Christian walked before arriving at the Cross—saved, yet burdened by doubts and fears concerning forgiveness.
The lesson of the chapter is that believers must come to understand and trust the finished work of Christ.
Three Heavenly Visitors
Following the removal of the burden, Bunyan introduces three radiant figures who appeared before Christian.
The class examined each encounter carefully.
“Peace Be Unto You”
The first figure announced peace and declared that Christian’s sins had been forgiven.
Participants described this as a picture of reconciliation with God.
The war was over.
The guilt that had separated Christian from God had been dealt with.
New Garments
The second figure removed Christian’s old clothing and clothed him in new garments.
The class recognised this as a picture of the righteousness of Christ.
Believers do not stand before God in their own righteousness but in the righteousness provided by Christ Himself.
The Seal
The third figure marked Christian’s forehead and gave him a sealed document to present at the Celestial City.
Participants connected this image with the sealing work of the Holy Spirit, who marks believers as belonging to God and assures them of their future inheritance.
Together, these three gifts painted a beautiful picture of forgiveness, justification, and assurance.
Christian’s Joy
The emotional climax of the chapter comes when Christian responds to what has happened.
He leaps for joy.
He sings.
He worships.
The class reflected on how natural this response is.
For weeks, Christian had carried a burden that weighed him down physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Now it was gone.
His song captured the wonder of the moment:
“Is this where my burden falls off my back?”
The answer, participants agreed, is yes.
The Cross remains the place where burdens are rolled away.
The Great Lesson of the Cross
As the meeting drew to a close, participants identified what may be the chapter’s central lesson.
The Cross is not merely the place where Christ died.
It is the place where believers discover the fullness of what His death accomplished.
The chapter warns against living beneath unnecessary guilt and condemnation.
It reminds Christians that Satan seeks to keep believers focused on their failures rather than on Christ’s victory.
And it calls believers to cling to the old rugged cross, trusting completely in the sacrifice that was made there.
One participant summarized the lesson memorably:
Christians do not stand before God in their own righteousness. They stand in the righteousness of Christ.
That truth transformed Christian’s pilgrimage.
And, as the Readers’ Club observed, it continues to transform pilgrims today.
Looking Ahead
With his burden gone, his sins forgiven, and his confidence renewed, Christian now moves forward into the next stage of the journey.
The road ahead will still contain dangers, enemies, and temptations.
But he now travels as a man who understands something he had not fully grasped before:
The price has been paid.
The burden is gone.
The Cross has changed everything.
