The GospelBells Radio Readers’ Club Class of 2026 gathered on Sunday, April 26, 2026, for its sixth session in the ongoing study of The Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan. This session, titled “Mr. Worldly Wiseman (IV)”, marked a decisive turning point in Christian’s journey—bringing him face to face with the futility of legalism and the restorative grace of divine correction.
A recording of this powerful session is embedded below, offering both participants and new listeners the opportunity to revisit and reflect on the rich insights shared.
When “Easy” Becomes Impossible
The reading opened with Christian attempting to follow Mr. Worldly Wiseman’s advice by heading toward the village of Morality to meet Mr. Legality. However, what had been presented as an easier alternative quickly revealed its true nature.
As Christian approached the hill leading to Morality, he discovered that:
“It seemed impossibly high… he froze, unsure how to proceed.”
The class identified this as one of the most important symbolic moments in the entire narrative.
Key Lesson 1: The Law Is Impossible to Fulfil
Participants unanimously agreed:
The “impossibly high hill” represents the law—and the truth that no one can fulfil it.
Even before reaching Mr. Legality, Christian encountered the reality that:
- The burden of sin remained
- The demands of the law were overwhelming
- The path he had chosen could not deliver what it promised
This reinforced a foundational truth:
No one can attain righteousness through human effort or law-keeping.
The Exposure of Deception
The class also examined the deeper strategy behind Mr. Worldly Wiseman’s counsel.
Participants concluded that:
- He knew the path was impossible
- He deliberately misled Christian
- He even anticipated failure—offering “Civility” (hypocrisy) as a backup plan
This led to a sobering insight:
Deception is often layered—offering both an impossible standard and a false fallback (appearance without reality).
Mount Sinai and the Fear of Judgment
As Christian approached the hill, it was described in terms reminiscent of Mount Sinai—with fire, thunder, and terror.
The class noted that this imagery was intentional:
Mount Sinai represents the law—and the fear, condemnation, and distance it creates between man and God.
Christian’s reaction—fear, trembling, and paralysis—highlighted a crucial truth:
The law reveals sin, but it cannot save.
Divine Intervention: The Return of Evangelist
At the height of Christian’s distress, Evangelist reappeared—once again at exactly the right moment.
This prompted a deeply practical reflection:
God sends help—often through people—precisely when it is needed.
Participants were encouraged to pray to be like Evangelist:
- Available
- Discernible
- Positioned by God to guide others
A Change in Tone: Gentle Guidance vs. Stern Rebuke
One of the most discussed aspects of the session was the contrast between Evangelist’s first and second encounters with Christian.
- The first encounter: gentle, encouraging, guiding
- The second encounter: stern, serious, corrective
The class concluded:
There is a time for gentle instruction—and a time for firm rebuke.
Importantly, this sternness was not born out of pride or offense, but out of:
Love and urgency—because Christian was on the path to destruction.
Key Lesson 2: Correction Is an Act of Love
Participants identified what was described as “holy anger”—a righteous urgency to warn someone in danger.
This led to a powerful takeaway:
True spiritual love does not ignore error—it confronts it for the sake of salvation.
Key Lesson 3: Personal Responsibility in Spiritual Error
A crucial moment came when Evangelist told Christian:
“You are the one running headfirst into this misery.”
This shifted the focus from blame to responsibility.
The class emphasized:
- While deception exists,
- Each believer is responsible for responding to truth
Christian had been shown the way—but chose to depart from it.
Spiritual accountability cannot be outsourced.
Key Lesson 4: The First Step to Restoration Is Truth
Despite his error, Christian did something commendable:
- He did not lie
- He admitted his mistake
- He confessed the truth plainly
Participants highlighted:
Honest confession is the first step toward restoration.
Key Lesson 5: Recognizing False Teaching for What It Is
Evangelist identified three dangers in Mr. Worldly Wiseman’s counsel:
- Turning Christian away from Christ (the narrow gate)
- Making the cross seem undesirable or burdensome
- Leading him onto a path that ends in destruction
The class emphasized that believers must:
Recognize, reject, and even “hate” teachings that draw them away from Christ.
Not out of hostility—but out of clear spiritual understanding of their danger.
Key Lesson 6: The Grace of Restoration
Perhaps the most comforting moment in the session came at the end.
After rebuke and correction, Evangelist reassured Christian:
“The man at the gate will still receive you… He is kind and welcomes people.”
This became the defining note of the evening:
No matter how far one strays, Christ remains ready to receive the repentant.
Final Reflection
The sixth session brought together warning and hope in a powerful balance:
- The law cannot save
- Deception must be discerned
- Responsibility must be owned
- Truth must be confessed
- Christ remains the only way—and the ever-open door
Looking Ahead
With Christian now redirected, the class eagerly anticipates the next chapter—his arrival at the Narrow Gate, a moment of great spiritual significance.
