The fatherhood of God belongs equally to all His children.
You who feel weak in faith may often say, “If only I had the courage of stronger believers—if only I were bold and fearless! But instead, I stumble easily, and even small things make me afraid.” Listen carefully: the strong believer is God’s child—and you are God’s child too. They are not more His child than you are.
Peter and Paul, those greatly used apostles, belonged to God’s family—and so do you. The weakest believer is just as much a child of God as the strongest.
This covenant stands secure,
Though earth itself may fall;
The strong, the weak, the trembling soul,
Are one in Christ, our all.
Every name is written in the same family record. One may have more grace than another, but God our Father loves all His children with the same tender heart. One may accomplish greater things, but even the least in the kingdom is just as truly a child of God as the greatest among them.
Let this bring comfort when you come before Him and say, “Our Father.”
Yet, while this truth comforts us, we should not be content with weak faith. Instead, let us pray, as the apostles did, “Lord, increase our faith.” Even the smallest true faith in Christ will lead us safely to heaven—but it may not bring much glory to Christ here on earth, nor fill us with the joy and peace we might otherwise enjoy.
If you desire to live for Christ’s glory and to experience deeper joy in His service, then seek to grow. Ask to be filled more and more with the Spirit of adoption, until perfect love drives out fear.
