Yes, Lord—a stranger with You, but not to You. By Your grace, the natural distance between my heart and Yours has been removed. Now, in fellowship with You, I walk through this sinful world like a pilgrim in a foreign land.
You Yourself are a stranger in Your own world. Humanity forgets You, dishonors You, establishes its own rules and customs, and does not recognize You. When Your beloved Son came to His own people, they did not receive Him. He was in the world, the world was made through Him, yet the world did not know Him. Never was a stranger more out of place among a people than Your dear Son was among the very ones He came to save.
So it is no surprise if I, who seek to live the life of Jesus, am also unknown and a stranger here on earth. Lord, I would not wish to be a citizen in a place where Jesus Himself was treated as an outsider. His pierced hands have loosened the cords that once bound my soul to this world, and now I find myself a stranger here.
My speech seems foreign to the people among whom I live. My ways appear unusual, and my actions seem strange to them. I feel less at home in the gatherings of sinners than a traveler from a distant land would feel in a busy city.
But here is the sweetness of my condition: I am a stranger with You.
You are my companion in suffering and my fellow pilgrim along the way. What joy it is to walk through life in such blessed company! My heart burns within me when You speak to me along the road, and though I live as a sojourner here, I am far more blessed than those who sit on earthly thrones, and far more at home than those who dwell comfortably in their grand houses.
To me remains neither place nor time;
My country is in every land.
I can be calm and free from care
On any shore—since God is there.
Whether I seek a place or leave it,
The soul finds no true rest in any;
But with God to guide the way,
It is equal joy to go or stay.
