“Love your neighbour.” Perhaps your neighbour is wealthy while you are poor, living in a small cottage beside his grand home. Every day you see his large estate, his fine clothing, and his abundant feasts. God has given him these blessings—do not envy his wealth or harbor bitter thoughts against him. Be content with what you have if you cannot improve your situation. Do not look at your neighbour and wish he were brought down to your level. Instead, love him, and your love will drive away envy.
Or perhaps the situation is reversed. You may be wealthy, and the poor live near you. Do not refuse to call them your neighbours. Remember that you are commanded to love them. The world may call them your inferiors, but in what way are they truly inferior? In reality, they are much more your equals than your inferiors, for “God has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth.” Your clothing may be finer than theirs, but that does not make you a better person. They are human beings—and what are you beyond that? Therefore, be careful to love your neighbour, even if he wears rags or struggles in deep poverty.
Perhaps you say, “I cannot love my neighbours because they repay my kindness with ingratitude and contempt.” But that only creates more opportunity for the courage of true love. Do you want a life of comfort and ease, or are you willing to engage in the difficult battle of love? Those who dare the most in love gain the greatest victory. If the path of love is difficult, walk it boldly anyway. Continue loving your neighbours in every circumstance.
Overcome evil with kindness. If they are difficult to please, do not live to please them—live to please your Master. Even if they reject your love, remember that your Master accepts it. Your act of love is just as pleasing to Him as if it had been gratefully received.
Love your neighbour, for when you do, you are walking in the footsteps of Christ.
