“Sin… exceeding sinful.” – Romans 7:13

  • by

Beware of thinking lightly about sin. When a person first comes to Christ, the conscience is usually very tender. Even the smallest sin troubles the heart. Young believers often have a holy caution and a sincere fear of offending God. But sadly, this sensitivity can fade as the world’s influence wears it down. The delicate plant of early devotion can become like a willow—too flexible, too ready to bend.

It is a sobering truth that even a Christian can gradually grow insensitive. Sins that once caused alarm may eventually pass almost unnoticed. Little by little, people become familiar with sin. An ear that has grown used to the thunder of cannons soon ignores smaller sounds. At first, a small sin shocks us; but before long we say, “Is it not just a small matter?” Then another sin follows, and then another, until we begin to treat sin as something minor.

Soon we excuse ourselves: “At least I have not fallen into open sin. Yes, I stumbled a little, but overall I remain upright. Perhaps I spoke an unwise word, but most of my conversation has been good.” In this way we minimize sin. We cover it with excuses and give it gentler names.

Christian, be careful never to treat sin lightly. Guard your heart against slowly drifting downward. Is sin really a small thing? Is it not a deadly poison whose power we cannot fully measure? Do not the little foxes spoil the vineyard? Does not the tiny coral insect build reefs that wreck great ships? Do not small repeated blows bring down mighty trees? Do not steady drops of water wear away stone?

Sin—a small thing? It placed the crown of thorns on the Redeemer’s head and pierced His heart. It brought Him anguish, bitterness, and suffering. If you could weigh even the smallest sin on the scales of eternity, you would flee from it like a serpent and hate even the slightest appearance of evil.

Remember this always: sin is the very thing that crucified the Saviour. When you see it in that light, you will recognize that it is truly “exceedingly sinful.”
