God’s people will experience trials. When God chose His people, He never intended that they should live without testing. They were chosen in the furnace of affliction, not for a life of worldly ease or constant earthly joy. Freedom from sickness and suffering was never promised. Instead, when the Lord outlined the privileges of His children, He included discipline and trials among the things they would certainly inherit.
Trials are part of our portion. They were appointed for us in Christ’s final legacy. Just as surely as God formed the stars and fixed their courses, He has also appointed our trials—their timing, their place, their intensity, and the purpose they will accomplish in us.
God’s people should not expect to escape trouble. If they do, they will be disappointed, because none of the faithful who came before us were spared. Think of Job and his patience. Remember Abraham, who endured many trials and through faith became the “father of the faithful.” Consider the lives of the patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs. You will find that every vessel of mercy passed through the fire of affliction.
From ancient times it has been ordained that the cross of suffering should mark every vessel of mercy, like a royal seal identifying the King’s treasured vessels of honor.
Yet while tribulation is the path of God’s children, they have great comfort. Their Master walked this road before them. They have His presence and sympathy to encourage them, His grace to sustain them, and His example to teach them how to endure. And when they finally enter the kingdom, it will more than repay them for all the tribulation they endured along the way.
