We are engaged in a great war against the Philistines of evil, and every weapon within our reach must be used. Preaching, teaching, praying, giving—all must be brought into action. Even talents that seem too small or insignificant must now be employed. The plowshare, the axe, the mattock—all can be useful in striking down the enemy. Rough tools may deliver hard blows, and victory does not need to be elegant, only effective. Every moment of time, whether convenient or not; every bit of ability, whether trained or untrained; every opportunity, whether favorable or unfavorable, must be used—for our enemies are many, and our strength is small.
Most of our tools need sharpening. We need sharper perception, greater energy, more tact, more promptness—in short, complete readiness for the Lord’s work. Practical common sense is often lacking among those who lead Christian efforts. We could learn from our enemies, and in that way let the Philistines sharpen our weapons.
This morning, let us take note enough to sharpen our zeal by the Spirit’s help. Look at the zeal of the heathen—how they cross land and sea to win a single convert. Shall they have all the earnestness? Consider the heathen devotees—what tortures they endure for their idols. Shall they alone show patience and sacrifice? Observe the prince of darkness—how persistent he is in his schemes, how bold in his plans, how thoughtful in his plots, how energetic in all his work! The devils are united in their rebellion, while we believers in Jesus are often divided in our service, rarely working with true unity.
O that we might learn from Satan’s relentless industry to go about like good Samaritans, seeking whom we may bless!
