It is the believer’s privilege to speak this way. If he looks to the world for help, his “expectation” will be poor indeed. But if he looks to God to supply his needs—whether physical or spiritual—his “expectation” will never be in vain. By faith, he can continually draw from the riches of God’s lovingkindness, and his needs will be met.
I know this much: I would rather have God as my banker than all the wealth of the Rothschilds. My Lord never fails to honor His promises. When we bring them before His throne, He never sends them back unanswered. That is why I wait only at His door, for He always opens it with the generous hand of grace. Even now, I will test His faithfulness again.
But our “expectation” goes beyond this life. We will die soon, and then our “expectation is from Him.” Do we not trust that when we lie on the bed of sickness, He will send His angels to carry us to His bosom? We believe that when the pulse grows faint and the heart struggles, an angelic messenger will stand by, look upon us with love, and whisper, “Sister spirit, come away!”
As we approach the gates of heaven, we expect to hear the welcome invitation: “Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” We are expecting harps of gold and crowns of glory. We are hoping soon to join the shining multitude before the throne. We are longing for the day when we will be like our glorious Lord—for “we shall see Him as He is.”
So then, if these are your “expectations,” O my soul, live for God. Live with the desire and resolve to glorify Him—the One from whom all your supplies come, and whose grace in election, redemption, and calling gives you any “expectation” of eternal glory.
