Salvation is entirely the work of God. He alone awakens the soul that is “dead in trespasses and sins,” and He alone sustains it in spiritual life. He is both the Alpha and the Omega. Truly, “Salvation is of the Lord.”
If I am prayerful, it is because God has made me so. If I have any graces, they are His gifts. If I live a consistent life, it is because He upholds me with His hand. I contribute nothing to my own preservation except what God Himself first works in me. Whatever goodness I have comes from Him alone. Where I sin, that is my own doing; but where I act rightly, it is wholly and completely of God.
If I have resisted a spiritual enemy, it was the Lord’s strength that empowered me. If I live a consecrated life before others, it is not I, but Christ living in me. If I am sanctified, it is not because I cleansed myself, but because the Holy Spirit sanctifies me. If I am detached from the world, it is because God’s loving discipline has weaned me for my good. If I grow in knowledge, it is because the Great Teacher instructs me. Every jewel of grace I possess has been crafted by heavenly hands.
In God I find everything I need; in myself I find only sin and misery. “He only is my rock and my salvation.” If I feed on the Word, it is because the Lord makes it nourishment for my soul and enables me to receive it. If I live on the manna from heaven, that manna is Christ Himself—His body and blood, my true food and drink. If I continually receive fresh strength, it is because my help comes from heaven’s hills. Without Jesus, I can do nothing. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit unless it abides in the vine, neither can I unless I abide in Him.
What Jonah learned in the depths of the sea, let me learn this morning in the quiet of my room: “Salvation is of the Lord.”
