Here is sovereign mercy: “I will give them the shower in its season.” Isn’t this divine, sovereign mercy? For who else can say, “I will give them showers,” except God? Only His voice commands the clouds and calls forth the rain. Who sends rain upon the earth? Who scatters showers upon the green herb? “Do not I, the Lord?” So it is with grace—it is God’s gift, not something man can create.
It is also necessary grace. What would the ground do without showers? You may break the soil and plant your seeds, but without rain, nothing will grow. In the same way, God’s blessing is absolutely essential. All our labor is in vain until He sends the abundant shower of salvation.
And it is abundant grace. “I will send them showers.” Notice, He doesn’t say drops, but showers. When God blesses, He often does so in such measure that there isn’t room enough to contain it. We need abundant grace—to keep us humble, to make us prayerful, to make us holy, to stir up zeal, to preserve us through life, and finally to bring us safely to heaven. We cannot live without these saturating showers of grace.
It is also timely grace. “I will cause the shower to come down in its season.” What season are you in today? Is it a season of drought? Then that is the season for showers. Is it a season of heaviness and dark clouds? Then that is the season for showers. “As your days, so shall your strength be.”
And here is a varied blessing: “I will give you showers of blessing.” The word is plural. God sends all kinds of blessings, linked together like a golden chain. If He gives converting grace, He will also give comforting grace. He will send “showers of blessing.”
So look up today, O thirsty soul, and open your heart like a parched plant, ready to receive the heavenly watering.
