Think of how many prayers you have offered since the very first moment you learned to pray. Your earliest prayer was for yourself—you cried out for mercy, asking God to forgive your sins. And He heard you. But after He wiped away your sins like a cloud, you did not stop praying for yourself.
You have continued to pray for sanctifying grace—grace that restrains you from sin and strengthens you to obey. You have asked for renewed assurance of faith, for the promises of God to be applied to your heart, for deliverance in times of temptation, for help in the duties God assigns, and for support in seasons of trial. Again and again, you have been driven to God like a constant beggar, asking Him for everything your soul needs.
Children of God, bear witness to this truth: you have never been able to supply your soul from any other source. Every piece of bread your soul has eaten has come down from heaven, and every drop of water it has drunk has flowed from the living Rock—Christ Jesus the Lord. Your soul has never grown rich on its own; it has always lived on God’s daily provision. You are, and have always been, a dependent recipient of His grace.
That is why your prayers have risen to heaven for an almost endless variety of spiritual mercies. Your needs have been countless, and God’s supplies have been abundant beyond measure. Your prayers have been many—and so have His answers. He has heard you in the day of trouble. He has strengthened you and helped you, even at times when you dishonoured Him by doubting and trembling before the throne of grace.
