It is a precious and comforting truth that Jesus Christ did not come on His own initiative, nor without the will, authority, approval, and active support of the Father. He was sent by the Father to be the Saviour of the world. We are sometimes inclined to forget that although there are distinctions of Persons within the Trinity, there is no division of honour among them. Too often, we attribute the work of our salvation—and especially its tenderness and mercy—more to the Son than to the Father. This is a serious mistake.
Yes, Jesus came—but who sent Him? Yes, He spoke with unmatched wisdom—but who filled His lips with grace so that He might be a perfect minister of the new covenant? The one who truly knows the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit will never set one above the other in love or honour. Such a believer sees them together at Bethlehem, in Gethsemane, and on Calvary—each fully and lovingly engaged in the great work of redemption.
Believer, have you placed your trust in the Man Christ Jesus? Do you rely wholly upon Him, and are you united with Him by faith? Then be assured of this: you are united also with the God of heaven. If you are a brother to Christ, and enjoy close fellowship with Him, then you are thereby brought into relationship with the Eternal God Himself. The Ancient of Days is your Father and your Friend.
Have you ever stopped to consider the depth of love in the heart of God the Father, who prepared and sent His Son on this great mission of mercy? If not, let this be your meditation today. The Father sent Him. Dwell on that truth. See how perfectly the Son carries out the Father’s will. And as you look upon the wounds of the dying Saviour, discern in them the love of the great I AM. Let every thought of Jesus also lead your heart to the Eternal, ever-blessed God, for it was the Lord who was pleased to bruise Him and put Him to grief—for us.
