Christians begin to sing in the ways of the Lord at the moment they first lay down their burden at the foot of the Cross. Not even the songs of angels sound as sweet as that first song of joy that rises from the depths of a forgiven heart. John Bunyan captures it beautifully. He tells us that when poor Pilgrim lost his burden at the Cross, he leaped for joy three times and went on his way singing:
“Blest Cross! blest Sepulchre! blest rather be
The Man that there was put to shame for me!”
Believer, do you remember the day your chains fell off? Do you recall the place where Jesus met you and said, “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have blotted out your transgressions like a cloud, and your sins like a thick mist; they shall never be remembered against you again”? Oh, what a precious moment it is when the Lord lifts the crushing weight of sin.
When the Lord first pardoned my sin, my joy was so great I could hardly contain myself. On my way home from the place where I had been set free, I felt as though I must tell the stones in the street about my deliverance. My soul overflowed with joy, and I wanted to tell every falling snowflake of the amazing love of Jesus, who had wiped away the sins of one who had been a great rebel.
But our reason for singing does not end at the beginning of the Christian life. As long as believers live, they find fresh reasons to sing in the ways of the Lord. Daily experiences of His faithful love move them to say, “I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.”
See to it, dear brother, that you magnify the Lord today.
“Long as we tread this desert land,
New mercies shall new songs demand.”
