“Mighty to save.” – Isaiah 63:1

By the words “to save,” we understand the whole work of salvation—from the very first holy desire in the heart to complete sanctification in glory. Much is contained in this single phrase; indeed, it gathers all mercy into one expression. Christ is not only mighty to savethose who repent; He is also mighty enough to cause repentance. He does not merely bring believers to heaven; He gives new hearts, creates faith, and awakens spiritual life where there was none.

He is mighty to turn a heart that hates holiness into one that loves it, and to bring the proud despiser of His name to bow before Him. Nor does His power stop there. The same divine strength is clearly seen in the believer’s daily life. The Christian life itself is a continuing series of miracles performed by “the Mighty God.” Like the bush that burned yet was not consumed, the believer lives by sustaining grace.

Christ is mighty not only to make His people holy, but also to keep them holy—to preserve them in reverence and love until He completes His work in heaven. His strength is not shown by beginning a good work and then leaving it unfinished. No—He who begins the work carries it on. He who plants the first spark of spiritual life in a dead soul sustains and strengthens it, until every chain of sin is broken and the soul rises from earth, perfected in glory.

Believer, here is strong encouragement. Are you praying for a loved one? Do not give up. Christ is mighty to save. You may be powerless to reclaim the rebel, but your Lord is almighty. Lay hold of that mighty arm and plead for its power to be revealed. Does your own spiritual struggle trouble you? Fear not—His strength is sufficient for you. Whether beginning the work in others or continuing it in you, Jesus Christ is mighty to save. The greatest proof of this is that He has already saved you. And what mercy it is that you have never known Him as mighty to destroy.
