Dear Christian pilgrim,

Have you ever felt the stirring within, the deep knowing that something greater than yourself is needed to accomplish the things you know you should do? Without the abiding presence of God’s Holy Spirit, we find ourselves lacking the power to fulfill our obligations.

Consider this: You know you should love others the way God loves—wholeheartedly and unconditionally. Do you?

You know you should forgive others as God forgives you. Do you?

You know you should do only those things that your Lord would do. Do you?

Reflect on this truth: The state of your heart is of utmost importance to God. It should be pure and undefiled. Is it?

And remember: Your prayer should be that God’s will, not yours, be done in your life and in the world. Is that your prayer?

If you find yourself unable to answer yes to all or any of these questions, you may experience frustration similar to Paul’s. Despite knowing what should be done, he lamented, ‘I see another law at work in my body, warring against the law of my mind and holding me captive to the law of sin that dwells within me. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?’

Take heart, for there is hope. Like Paul, you too can find encouragement and give thanks to God, who has made a way out for you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, you can pray for the help of the Holy Spirit, saying:

  1. Breathe on me, Breath of God,
    Fill me with life anew,
That I may love what Thou dost love,
And do what Thou wouldst do.
  2. Breathe on me, Breath of God,
    Until my heart is pure,
Until with Thee I will one will,
    To do and to endure.
  3. Breathe on me, Breath of God,
    Till I am wholly Thine,
Until this earthly part of me
    Glows with Thy fire divine.
  4. Breathe on me, Breath of God,
    So shall I never die,
But live with Thee the perfect life
    Of Thine eternity.

May the Holy Spirit descend upon you once more, filling you, strengthening you, and working in and through you, granting you the desire and the power to do what pleases Him. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
