Pilgrim’s Light Devotional – 2 Chron. 25:9

GOD WILL NOT OWE ANY MAN ANYTHING IN THE END

“And Amaziah said to the man of God, ‘But what shall we do about the hundred talents that I have given to the army of Israel?’ And the man of God answered, ‘The Lord is able to give you much more than this.’” – 2 Chronicles 25:9

This seemed like a very important question to the king of Judah, and perhaps it feels even weightier to you, O tempted Christian. Losing money is never pleasant, and when obedience to principle requires such a loss, the flesh is often unwilling to make the sacrifice. Thoughts arise like: “Why throw away something that could be so useful? Isn’t it possible to pay too high a price for doing what’s right? How will we manage without this? What about the children—and our small income?” A thousand such arguments crowd in and tempt a believer either to grasp after unjust gain or to shrink from carrying out his convictions when doing so would be costly.

Not everyone can look at such matters through the eyes of faith; and even among Jesus’ followers, the worldly maxim “we must live” still carries far too much influence.

But the answer given by the man of God is more than sufficient for every anxious question: “The Lord is able to give you much more than this.”
Our Father holds the purse, and whatever we lose for His sake, He can restore a thousandfold. Our duty is simply to obey. We may rest confidently in the assurance that He will provide. God will not owe any man anything in the end.

The saints know well that a single grain of peace of conscience is worth more than mountains of gold. A person who wears a threadbare coat but keeps a clean conscience possesses a wealth far greater than anything he may have surrendered. God’s smile—even in a dungeon—is enough for a true heart; His frown—even in a palace—would be torment to a gracious soul.

Let the worst come; let all the talents be lost. Even then, you have lost nothing essential, for your true treasure is above, where Christ sits at the right hand of God. And even now, in this present life, the Lord causes the meek to inherit the earth and withholds no good thing from those who walk uprightly.
