A missionary once visited a small village in a distant land. The people had never seen an electric lamp before, so he gave one of the villagers a shiny, glass-covered lamp as a gift.

Weeks later, when the missionary returned, he was surprised to find that the lamp was hanging proudly in the man’s hut—but it wasn’t lit.

“Why don’t you use it?” he asked.

The villager smiled. “Oh, I do,” he said proudly. “Every evening, when it gets dark, I hang it up outside my door so everyone can see that I have a lamp… like yours!”

The missionary peered closer. There was no oil inside—no light burning, no warmth, no glow. Just an empty shell, admired, but powerless.
