Welcome to Word of the Day on GospelBells Radio. Today, the word under the spotlight is, “Theophany.”
(Continue reading or listen as presented on the radio by Dewunmi Afolabi-Ajani)
Theophany is defined as the visible manifestation of God to humankind.
In simple terms, it’s when God chooses to reveal Himself in a way people can see or tangibly experience.
We find examples of theophanies in Scripture. In Exodus 3, God appeared to Moses in the burning bush that was not consumed. In Genesis 18, Abraham encountered three mysterious visitors, one of whom is understood to be the Lord Himself. And in the New Testament, the ultimate theophany is in Jesus Christ—God made flesh, dwelling among us (John 1:14).
The blessing for us is this: we no longer need to fear that God is distant or unknowable. He reveals Himself. He draws near. And in Christ, He has shown Himself in love, truth, and grace.

Lord, thank You for revealing Yourself in ways we can understand and receive. Help us to recognize Your presence, not only in the extraordinary moments, but also in the quiet, everyday ways You make Yourself known to us. Keep our hearts open to Your nearness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Now, let’s do an exercise. Can you make a Christian-themed sentence with the word, Theophany? I’ll go first: “The birth of Jesus is the greatest theophany, God stepping into our world to save us.”
Now, make your own Christian-themed sentence with the word, Theophany in the comments section. We’ll be looking out for it.
